Hi all,
I'm in the market for a new router to replace the BT home hub as provided by my broadband supplier. I was looking at budget (now old) ASUS model (like RT-AX53U) but as I already own a few GLi.Net products I decided this brand may be a better option.
I currently use a GL-AR300M16 plugged into the back of my BT router and use that as my WireGuard server and hosting of IoT devices through its Guest network. This appears to work well but looking for a more all in one and higher performant solution.
Do you think the Gl-AX1800 (Flint) is a good choice?
Comments appreciated.
Hi
The Flint (GL-AX1800) is a substantial upgrade over the Shadow (GL-AR300M16) in several key areas:
- Dual-Band Connectivity: Unlike the 2.4GHz-only AR300M16, the AX1800 supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. This allows you to keep IoT devices on the 2.4GHz band while using the faster 5GHz band for your primary devices to minimize interference.
- Enhanced VPN Performance: The AX1800 provides significantly higher WireGuard and OpenVPN speeds, making it much better suited for high-bandwidth tasks while acted as a VPN server.
- Advanced Features: Thanks to its more powerful processor and increased memory, you can now run hardware-intensive features like AdGuard Home for network-wide ad filtering—something the AR300M16 cannot support due to hardware limitations.
Thanks ive actually gone up a model and went for the Flint 2 in the end.
