I have GL-SFT1200 and im tryingg to usb tether to a cell phone. I think i need to connect to the router and set it for usb tethering. I enter 192.168.8.1 in chrome on my phone and google shows some search results. I cannot seem to get to the router web page.
Ensure you are typing the IP address on the chrome web address bar section, not via a widget app as that indeed could be defaulting to Google search which isn't what's needed. You need to fill out the main web address bar and ensure you include http:// before the IP address. For example you need to visit: http://192.168.8.1 < You can actually just click that link now and it should load the URL for the router, you will need to be connected to the glinet router first. If on mobile ensure you stay connected to the glinet WiFi as you might get a prompt stating there's no internet and it will ask to leave or stay on the network, again click stay connected (it's worded something like that)
If you are still seeing the Google search results then you are typing the URL in the wrong field. Basically ensure you are typing the full URL/IP where you would put https://www.gl-inet.com/ for example.
I've typed 192.168.8.1 in the address field. This morning I was able to connect to the router via chrome but I no longer can. Tried restarting router & phone but still can't connect. I saw wifi booster as an option and that would probably be easier but i cant get to the 192.168.8.1 menu again. Any suggestions how to proceed?
If using the wifi amplifier works on site i should be good. One of my phones was reverting to auto-connect to switch wifi i was using. Didnt knownthay could happen.
I've no idea what you are referring to when you say "WiFi amplifier" and "works on site" I'm guessing you are trying to connect to your router however you are connecting to another nearby WiFi or your phone is reverting to a WiFi connection that has internet (as when you connect to your router if there is no internet you get a prompt asking if you want to switch networks or stay)
You will never be able to hit the routers IP address unless you are connected to the router, either via ethernet or via the default router SSID. So you must connect directly to the router and then you can access the routers login.
Visit the documentation site and see if there's any suggestions to your problem.
The 192.168.8.1 menu has repeater as an option. I am trying to use the router as a repeater of a motorola phone hotspot. My source for the wifi is a motorola phone i bought from tmobile. Wifi hotspot is enabled on motorola phone. Using another phone i verified that the hotspot was in the list of possible wifi's. My hotspot signal strength falls rapidly as i walk away. How can I tell if the repeater is really repeating? Thanks
Well your hotspot signal is irrelevant to your other phone. You leave the Motorola phone that is acting as the hotspot to your router next to the router and connect them together.
Your phone that needs to connect to the "hotspot" now needs to connect directly to router as that is now a glorified hotspot. The actual hotspot signal from the Motorola hotspot to the router will be strong and connected. Your range limitation of your connected phone to the router is now limited by the radio output of the router.
Using your Motorola phone in hotspot / repeater mode probably isnt going to be as good as using it via USB tether (when deciding which mode to use when connecting to the router for internet access). USB tethering has the benefit of not needing to use a WiFi band to repeat the connection. You can think of USB tether as like an ethernet cable but coming from your hotspot (Motorola phone) to the router, it will be a better setup.
I hope that clears up what you're asking.
Failing that I can only advise you to read the docs as most of the answers are there.
Id like to know how i can verify that the router is actually repeating when it is configured as a repeater. Is there a way to do that? I would expect that the wifi signal is reduced by range but the wifi signal strength as shown on another phone just drops off very quickly. I dont expect a gaurantee that wifi will work in all circumstances but the signal strength declines so quickly i think i may be connected to the motorola phone and not the router.
If your router has internet then repeater mode is working.
Ensure your devices are only connecting to the router WiFi SSID.
