Use case: setting up network devices

I have a use case question. I’m considering the Comet Pro as a solution for deploying and troubleshooting network devices, such as firewalls or switches. I would use Tailscale. There would be two primary requirements:

  1. Be able to use a usb-to-serial adapter to connect to the device.
  2. Be able to connect the Comet’s ethernet port to the device in order to connect to the devices webgui.

I understand the #1 works, but other forum members had trouble finding an adapter that works. Is there any list of adapters that have been tested?

I suspect that this isn’t a typical use case. If not, is there any reason that reverse SSH tunneling wouldn’t work?

Just my 2cents, and not trying to knock the Comet Pro. If you have a Comet Pro already this might make sense as a use-case to make the device more useful.

Doesn’t seem very cost effective to purchase just for this though? Something like ConsolePI is already a thing and seems more suitable directly for this use-case at a much lower cost as you are not paying for the video input etc that wouldn’t get used?

at least ch341 is supported

Glad you mentioned that — I’m actually looking at the Comet 5G, not the Pro. But yeah, the builtin modem is what sells it for me. The KVM functionality could actually be used sometimes, although rarely. I could probably do the same thing with any of their modems, assuming they also have the usb-serial drivers and Tailscale builtin.

Looks like FTDI is supported also, which is what most of the modern usb/serial adapters use and is the recommended ones to buy for most people anyway :ok_hand:t2:
