I sometimes want to use my GL-XE3000 router without attaching its antennas while it’s in my backpack for 1-2 hours. I’m aware that this will reduce signal quality, but I’d like the convenience for simple tasks. Could using the router without its antennas in this way cause any damage to the device?
We suggest that you are always get the antenna connected while using. We cannot promise that it will not damage the router if you don't connect antennas.
In our past years, the only accident that we have in record is that, one users attach/detach the antenna while the router is powered damaged the wifi chipset. But there is no such record thereafter.
I’m talking about running the router without attaching the GSM and Wi-Fi antennas at all not about plugging or unplugging the antennas while the router is running. Sometimes, when I’m travelling and only need to quickly send an email, I consider using the router without any antennas attached.
If there’s a strong enough GSM signal without the antennas, I’d send the email and then turn the router off again. So, in such situations, I wouldn’t attach or remove antennas while the router is on. I’m asking whether it’s okay to use the router in this way without any antennas when the data speed is just enough to send an email, even if the GSM or Wi-Fi signal is slower than usual.
I've read on other forums that running routers without the wifi antennas can be harmful to the wifi radios. If I remember correctly it had something to do with the antennas providing some resistance and without the resistance the wifi radios can be damaged.
This is actually what I am afraid of, which is why I wanted to hear whether there would technically be a problem or not, but it seems a bit unclear. It feels like there isn’t a definite answer as to whether such an issue would occur or not.
