VPN Speed Test report

Hi all,
Please share your VPN speed with New firmware on Slate AX.
My VPN speed test is as follows:
Protocol - OpenVPN
Service Provider: NordVPN
Server Location: HK, Taipei, Singapore and Frankfurt
Download Speed Max.: 180Mbps; Upload Speed Max.: 182Mbps (HK Server)

Protocol - WireGuard
Service Provider: MullVad
Server Location: US, Thailand, Singapore and Germany
Download Speed Max.: 421Mbps Upload Speed Max.:525Mbps(HK server)

do we have any option yet to set the button of the router to turn on & off the vpn?

this little router is a killer !!!
my main router 10meters distance from my mac:

axt1800 5 meters distance from my mac as repeater:

Open Vpn with windscribe :

wireguard with same server as open vpn :

These numbers don’t make sense to me, even allowing for the fact that throughput numbers are useless without knowing the speed of the server, and the speed of the client internet connection.

But If @simonli can get 156/171, basically maxing out the OpenVPN server, and max out a 500/500 connection with Wireguard, I don’t follow how @emmgr23 can only get 48/38 with OpenVPN on a server that seems to support 166/79 with wireguard. It seems to me he ought to be getting 160/80ish at least.

My setup situation:
PC–Ethernet Cable-AXT1800-Ethernet Cable-Fiber modem.
My location is HK, so I tested the HK server from VPN provider.
I want to know what’s the maximum speed I can get via Slate AX.

Setup: ATX1800 from Taipei as wireguard client connect to 5 country servers of Mullvad VPN
Countries: Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, USA, Sweden
Method: randomly pick 3 Speedtest server locations in each country
Connection: PC Wi-Fi(non-WiFi 6 card) to ATX1800(5Ghz channel) (there’s still room for faster speed if I switch to Wi-Fi 6 card)

number read: PING time, Download speed, Upload speed

NordVPN - OpenVPN - Canada ca1477 - 1Gbps Ethernet Client over 500Mbps/15Mbps Cable Internet

NordVPN - WireGuard - Canada ca1016 - 1Gbps Ethernet Client over 500Mbps/15Mbps Cable Internet

Firmware 4.0.0 beta8 installed. WireGuard maxed out my Internet and there may be some room for a bit more.

I do not work for and I do not have formal association with GL.iNet

So far this is what I got for wireguard with mullvad:

my isp: KPN
hardwired:yes
country: Netherlands
speeds:
up: 200mb/s (I get easily 300-400mb/s but this might be related due to the overhead they sent me I
expect after 200mb/s the advertised speed, the upload gets unstable so I just would keep it on
200mb/s.

down: 204mb/s (this is accurate)

for NL:
Mullvad NL22:

for FR:
Mullvad FR15:

for US:
Mullvad US172:

for AUS:
Mullvad AUS11:

for Singapore:
Mullvad SG4:

the first few speedtests are countries close around my current location, the other ones are really far away :), though I’m still amazed about the performance I get and when I watch other results from other people here, I think my wireguard speed could even go higher but its bottle necked by my isp.

OK, hardwired in my internal network to show (possible) maximums:

First, direct connection from laptop to network

Next, adding the router as a pure passthrough

OK, WireGuard

And lastly, OpenVPN

I might have to look again at that last one, because I don’t think it should be that slow.

Cheers.

Here are Speed Tests of the WireGuard Server on GL-AXT1800 Slate AX with Firmware 4.0.0 beta8:

  1. Windows 10 PC running WireGuard Client over 1Gbps Ethernet to router WAN
  2. Windows 10 PC running OpenSpeedTest-Server over 1Gbps Ethernet router LAN
  3. Internal LAN only without Internet connection

WireGuard Server turned off (1Gbps Baseline with port forwarding to OpenSpeedTest-Server)

WireGuard Server turned on (VPN tunnel to OpenSpeedTest-Server)

I am still working setting up OpenVPN Server to test.

I do not work for and I do not have formal association with GL.iNet

Odd that the download speed for wireguard is lower than the upload speed. On a very simple level, if openvpn is 125/125, I would have expected wireguard to be 500/500.

SlateAX setup with WWAN (no hardwire) , OVPN to PIA. Speed are really good, better than Brume. I have a 200mbps link.

Wireguard via my VPS is even better:

Aha, you finally get the upgrade of Brume.

This was done a few meters from my nearest cell tower.

This is directly from my HTC 5G Hub, rate is halved routing traffic to the router, I am using Ethernet cable that supports over 1Gbps rates. Does anyone know why this is happening?

From HTC 5G hub with Ethernet to Wan port on SlateAXT

With OpenVPN UK Servers

You should not test speed on the router. It has limited resources for this.

You should test speed on your pc.
