Why does my new GL.iNet GL-MT6000 have an outdated OpenWrt 21.02-SNAPSHOT firmware?

Hi everyone,

I just bought a GL.iNet GL-MT6000 router and noticed it runs:

OpenWrt 21.02-SNAPSHOT r15812+1085-46b6ee7ffc

From what I understand, this is an old development version that might lack important security updates.

My questions are:
Why does a brand new router come with such an outdated snapshot version?
Is there an official way to upgrade to a newer OpenWrt (like 23.05 or newer) without losing GL.iNet’s custom features (GUI, VPN, AdGuard, etc.)?
Does anyone have a step-by-step guide to safely update the firmware via LUCI or SSH, keeping the GL.iNet environment intact?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

You're lucky with 21.02 . GL-X2000 (brand new product) has 19.07 as Baseversion.
see GL-X2000 with openwrt 19.07 - what the

As far as I know i depends on the underlying SDK.
Here you can see all versions.

kind regards
