Beryl 7 (GL-MT3600BE) AmneziaWG Support and OpenWRT Version

I am interested in configuring a site-to-site AmneziaWG connection on the recently released Beryl 7 (GL-MT3600BE) that appears to be a strong upgrade to the Beryl AX (GL-MT3000) according to the product specification page. One issue I see is the firmware for the Beryl 7 uses OpenWRT version 21.02 whereas the Beryl AX has support for OpenWRT version 24.10 [firmware versions]. The minimum required OpenWRT version for setting up AmneziaWG is 23.05.0 [installation guide].

I would like to get clarification:

  • Is AmneziaWG support coming to the Beryl 7 (or any of the travel router models)?
  • Is a firmware update to OpenWRT version 23.05.0 (or higher) planned for the Beryl 7?
  • If so, is alpha/beta firmware available for the Beryl 7?

If these features are not planned, this information would be helpful for my use case because it would more sense for me to go with the Beryl AX with the newer OpenWRT support.

Hello,

  • AmneziaWG will be supported on Beryl7, as well as other GL router models such as Flint1 and newer, SlateAX and newer, etc.
  • The OpenWRT version build-in the MTK SDK is 21. There is currently no news that MTK plans to upgrade to a newer OpenWRT release.
  • Alpha builds are for internal testing, Beta builds are for public. They depend on the situation, if public testing is needed, Beta firmware will be available in the firmware center.

@bruce, are you able to share a timeline on when this support is expected to be released (or available for testing)?

It will be supported on firmware v4.9, probably around Q2.

Thanks for sharing. That's right around the corner.
