Fancy new Mudi 7

Are there any plans to release a global or Asia specific version at a later point or will EU be the global version?

My preference would have been to purchase a global version, so it was disappointing to see only NA/EU being announced. If there is a global version in the pipeline then I would prefer to wait for that.

@bruce or @will.qiu What is a “Qualcomm Dragonwing MBB Gen 3 (X72)” as featured in the specs of Mudi 7?

I did search the Qualcomm website and could not find such a version. MBB Gen 3 Platform only features X75.

Apart from that the X72 seems still to be called Snapdragon and not Dragonwing. So is it wrong naming or is it some special CPU of Qualcomm that even Qualcomm did not announce yet?

Hi,

Why does this router doesn’t have a microSD card slot? It has literally everything that I wanted (Mudi v2 user), but why it is missing something crucial as this? I’m using microSD card for exe/apk seup files between devices.

It’s extremely compact for what it is, and it will have two USB-C ports. At least one of them will function as a USB OTG port, meaning (I assume) that you’ll be able to plug a USB drive into it for quick and dirty file server/sharing functionality on the Mudi’s network.

It’s out now in the US. Check the website.

That’s not an alternative, I want to know the reason why it was removed because to me there was no reason at all to get rid of it.

Yes, that's true.
However, for example, Quectel modems, which are used in Gl.Inet routers, have both regional and global versions.

Here’s, for instance, a comparison of the frequencies between the RM520N-EU and RM520N-GL modems.

EU:
5G NR: n1/3/5/7/8/20/28/38/40/41/71/75/76/77/78;LTE-FDD: B1/3/5/7/8/20/28/32/71; LTE-TDD: B38/40/41/42/43; WCDMA: B1/5/8

GL(Global):
5G NR: n1/2/3/5/7/8/12/13/14/18/20/25/26/28/29/30/38/40/41/48/66/70/71/75/76/77/78/ 79; LTE-FDD: B1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/13/14/17/18/19/20/25/26/28/29/30/32/66/71; LTE-TDD: B34/38/39/40/41/42/43/48; LAA: B46; WCDMA: B1/2/4/5/8/19

Since the Mudi 7 is positioned as a travel router, it would be convenient if the modem supported a broader bands range.

To be precise, the questions above were:

  1. What modem model is installed in Mudi 7?

  2. Is it possible to replace the modem and upgrade it, like in Mudi V2?

  3. Will there be an option with a global version of the modem?

For this, there is no need to design and manufacture a custom modem; ready-made modems like Quectel, etc., can be used.

Only a tear down video will tell us about that.

Please see our responses below:

  1. We originally did not plan to disclose the specific cellular module model, but it seems you’ve already guessed it.
The cellular module is not removable, so it cannot be replaced with a different one.
  2. OpenWRT 23.05
  3. SMS messages can be read via the touchscreen, but sending is not supported yet.
  4. & 5. Not supported at the moment.

At the moment, there are no plans to release a variant equipped with a global-version module.

Thank you for your feedback. Let us check with team.

Thanks for the detailed info!

Most places use the same basic bands so I don’t think multiple devices will be required.

Newbie here. I’ve been looking for a device like the Mudi 7 for a while and I’ll be really tempted to get it when it’s released. If I get the US version (I’m in Canada), will it work at all in Europe? My hope is to get a device that will work on both sides of the pond.

But RM520N-GL only supports 3GPP Release 16 while RG650V supports 3GPP Release 17 already.

@bruce Is this setting a setting planned for Mudi 7? I mean the holding case for the wall only.

The antennas I assume won´t work like shown. I cannot imagine “snap in” TS-9 antennas that are part of a holding case. But looks cool of course

Can someone confirm if the pre-order date which came in the email is correct? Will it really be the 4rd Feb at 6PM PST?

the countdown embedded in the email doesn’t seem to be correct.

Can someone confirm or comment on this?

I wondered that, too … the countdown timer puts the release a day later. But in any case, their calendar link (at least for GCal) has it at 18:00 Pacific time Weds the 4th, so that’s when I’m going to try and get mine.

I noticed that the GL‑E5800 comes in two versions (NA and EU), but both have significant limitations for global use.

The EU version cannot properly operate on 4G in the United States because it lacks several essential LTE bands used by US carriers (such as B2, B4, B12, B13, B14, B17, B25, B26, B30, B66, B71). This makes 4G coverage and performance in the US very limited or unusable.

On the other hand, the NA version is basically only suitable for the US. It misses many key LTE/5G bands required in Europe, East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Australia, so its compatibility outside the US is very poor.

For users who travel frequently or need a single device that works across multiple regions, this split makes it difficult to choose. Is there any plan to offer a true global version or allow different modem module options?

This cannot be used in Asia with eSim at all? This only works in US?
