Flint 2 (GL-MT6000 ) - bug reports - collective thread

I can’t, because it depends on what you want, openwrt has a lot of wikis explaining how to install and configure everything from scratch.

This link I gave is a snapshot, that is, without Luci installed, you need to either create a customized firmware directly from the website or install it, connect via SSH and install Luci there.

This is if your internet is dhcp, if it is pppoe you will have to run some commands first too.

So reverting from 4.5.5 release 3 → release 1, is still crashing, maybe some config files are remaining. I am going to go back to 4.5.5 release 3, reset router and start again, in case there are stale configs.

I can crash the router consistently using SpeedTest . Net app on iphone . It always happens during the upload test.

I know @JerryZhao , you told me this is a Warning but the eth is never reset… I let the router run for a while to see if the eth is reset and it is not and it fails.

Ok, I backed up configs via luci, went back to 4.5.5 release 3, reset to default and restored config. I’ll let you know if I can crash it again.

It looks like the stock firmware used a channel between 52 to 64 and the OpenWrt snapshot used a channel between 100 to 144.

Using which snapshot version? Since 5GHz wasn’t improved until around r24793-e691e2b302. And since you’re using an Apple devices you should probably set the width to 80MHz and avoid using WPA3-SAE.

Did you set both the 5GHz and 2.4GHz radios to the same country? I’ve found that if you don’t then it can have issues.

r24804-912e573127 is what I am currently running. I was using 80MHz the whole time, today I tried 160MHz as japa said it is good for them. Hit 1.1Gbps download with 160MHz, which was nice. I haven’t disabled WPA3-SAE, thank you, I didn’t know that can cause problems. Do you have a pointer I can read up on?

@blackbox does this mean I cannot use WPA2-PSK/WPA3-SAE mixed mode? That is what I had.

Ah! No I did not! Let me try that, I was only modifying the 5GHz radio. Thanks, I will make them the same.

I was going to say that failing that you could try using 160MHz instead, since the issue previously was that VHT160 capabilities were being sent out by the router even if you weren’t using 160MHz. So it seems like 20/40/80MHz might still be an issue for some Apple devices

The issue with WPA3 is that a lot of devices don’t support it, the mixed mode is kinda pointless since an attacker can just downgrade to WPA2 and fast transitions often don’t work with it. Plus WPA3 requires 802.11w, which is a problem for some devices.

So by using WPA2-PSK with 802.11w disabled you’re eliminating any possible compatibility issues, which is going to make it easier for you to debug your network issues.

Did anyone of you set 2,4 and 5GHz to the same SSID? OpenWrt didn’t integrate the patch yet which would avoid crashes because of 2,4<->5Ghz roaming.

I always have them separate to simplify triaging issues, so I don’t have at least that.

Oh this might be the reason my router is crashing… I am using the same ssid (since I am used to the smartconnect I used to use on my previous Asus)

I experimented with matching SSIDs a week ago, but I didn’t experience any crashes when I disconnected 2 devices from 2.4GHz so that they’d reconnect to 5GHz. Maybe it depends on the device that’s connecting or how the change occurs though.

The GL-MT6000 LED pull request was merged tonight, so the next OpenWrt snapshot should use the white LED to match the stock firmware.

Do you know how often openwrt changes are merged into glinet official firmware that we get ?

Also any drawbacks using official openwrt firmare vs glinet ? I assume openwrt official firmware is just luci screens ?

I am using same ssid names but not crashes yet. Speed test is working without wireguard.

Version 4.5.5 v3

GL.iNet do seem to backport specific fixes from the master branch from time to time. But I believe they’re mainly using the stable 23.05 branch, which I would expect to be updated every time they release a new firmware? Otherwise you won’t see a “stable” update from GL.iNet until after the next OpenWrt service release.

I’ve been using OpenWrt for years, so I don’t personally feel as though I’m losing much. But if you’re not familiar with OpenWrt then you’ll find it harder to setup some things without GL.iNets UI. That plus you’ll lose Android/iOS app support and the ability to use full cone NAT.

And as I’ve said before, if you do try a snapshot be sure to build a custom one (click on Customize installed packages) so that it’ll include LuCI. And then once you’ve installed it follow this guide.

Thanks @blackbox , I’ll look into it, when I have some free time… I’ve mostly used Asus + Merlin fw but since I had a GL travel router and it worked with WG + Port forwarding that is lacking in Asus firmware, I swapped my main Asus AX86U to this, but it seems the GL firmware isn’t as stables as I hoped for.

I tried it with iPhone app tbh.

Being using 4.5.4 and it’s been kinda stable, but today I turned off hardware acceleration and my broadcast signal it’s a little bit more stable

4.5.4 crashed on me often when using WG + WiFi

I’m using the same SSID on 2.4 and 5ghz because I didn’t want to reconfigure 30 devices.

Not having any issues though. 4.5.4 firmware, Adguard Home and Wireguard Server both working great.

Slow 2.4ghz with speed around 60Mbps download 100 upload.
Something wrong there? Same on guest 2.4ghz wifi.

Getting 800+Mbps on 5ghz.

@JerryZhao and @alex_zheng is there any estimate on when they will release a beta version with the main bugs fixed? I imported the router for 200 dollars and that is the minimum wage in my country.

I’m thinking about returning the router and getting my money back due to the problems that have been reported and there is no solution for them so far.

Please provide at least a deadline, so we can wait for the beta version more calmly.

Well I made it a few hours past three days and it seemed to cras, but it also recovered with a ooop and panic in the crash log.
Latest official released firmware
5Ghz at 80MHz, AX non-DFS channel with WPA2/WPA3
2.4Ghz at 20Mhz, AX WAP2/WAP3
AdGuard and good cloud running, and ssh with syslogging to my server.
Nothing else special from default settings.
Speed seems to also recovered properly
2.4Ghz 110 down, 35 up
5Ghz 643 down, 35 up
Also checked the logs on the cell router modem, watchdog didn’t catch any loss of signal, and logs didn’t show any loss of signal or IP change from the cell tower or modem. So this was all the Flint2 doing.
