GL-AR750S-EXT Slate update firmwaare

I have a GL-AR750S-EXT, with firmware 3.216, no more updates appear automatically, however on the web there is a recent version 4.3.18, do you recommend updating? With version 3.216 it works perfectly, I would like to know if updating it would improve.

Upgrading to 4.x firmware must be done manually without (!) keeping settings. That is why it won't show up.

The decision if you want to update is up to you; read the release notes to decide.

I updated to the latest 4 version, works well but lost many functionalities. So. I decided to stay on 3.216 to keep most of functions working. But both works well in a general use, it's up to you.

Same here, tried v4 then went back to 3.216 as I make use of the easy SMB function. No extra Luci config required.

I agree with everyone suggesting staying on firmware 3.x, especially if you prefer stability. However, if you're more experienced with OpenWRT, you could consider installing full vanilla OpenWRT 23.x or 24.x snapshots. Performance-wise, there won't be much difference as it's still limited by the hardware.

It's also important to note that this model is End-of-Life (EOL), with official support ending in October 2024—just next month. If security and privacy are your top priorities, I would highly recommend switching to full native OpenWRT. Version 23.05.x allows you to add more features that aren't available in the stock firmware 3.x.

Keep in mind, though, that switching to OpenWRT means losing the simpler, more user-friendly GUI that comes with the default firmware. While this may be a challenge for those who aren't very technical, it’s definitely something you can learn with some time and effort.

The 4.3.x firmware is missing several important security features, and unfortunately despite promises made in this GL iNet blog post:

That the 4.6 firmware would be released for the AR750s and multiple other older routers with these additional security measures, GL iNet has not released it. These improvements are vital and all GL iNet models under support should have them by now.

Come on GL iNet. If you promise something, especially security related, deliver it.

If your anonymity is that important to you, surely you can justify an upgraded router, right? Lots of reasons to love the AR750S like size, but it is long in the tooth now. I bought my first AR750S over 5 years ago...

I could buy a new router, but as the hardware still meets my needs, and GL iNet committed to provide the security enhancements, why should I create more e-waste?

You will create more e-waste eventually, you may just delay it a little longer. But if it helps you sleep better a night, keep waiting on the third batch I guess. Best of luck.

@admon @alzhao help to keep the promise of 4.6 firmware on old and loved slate <3

probably they wont :frowning:

check this about a bug there is on the firmware 4.3.18+ also affect the AR750S-EXT and MangoV2 but the promise is just for the Beryl AX.

I'm going to move on this lovely device but I'll install native openwrt 23.5.x so I won't be limited by security updates or packages limited by old openwrt versions.

We should know in the next few months if GL iNet is an honorable company that makes good on their commitments.

Pretty sad that products have a lifetime of 5 years or so…

And another reason I’m experimenting with Opnsense - a small single board computer and a decent Access Point will probably get a lot more life, and big OSS projects like Opnsense will likely continue to be updated better than how most routers are treated.
