Hi i have just bought a GL-iNet Flint 3 (GL-BE9300) still boxed!! i have just been doing more reading of reviews about it and they are very very varied from great router to absolutely useless with many faults..lIKE
1 Randomly dropping connections.
2firmware bugs pretty bad
3 Overheating.
4 VPN speeds…pretty bad
5 Very poor 6ghz range
all this makes me a little worried as to whether i bought right . it was VERY expensive for me and i am practically a noob…
Did i do right or wrong???
so can i get some proper reviews from people who have one please (before i unbox it LOL)
I have been using mine as my primary router for quite a while now. I have not experienced any performance issues, but I do not use the wireless. I limit what packages I install (things like openssh, mosh, snmpd), so I am not pushing any real boundaries. With the current firmware, I have not had any issues that required random rebooting, including using a wireguard server instance on it.
For most things, I have better suited hardware to do and don’t like to load much else on to the firewall. So others might (likely?) have a difference experience. I also have a Flint2 that was in service for a while and I cannot tell much difference between them performance-wise.
For wired connections, can’t fault it. Never had an issue in that regard.
Wireless though has been a headache.
The MLO implementation is poor. Connectivity is spotty at best.
The WiFi range is also very hit or miss, sitting outside in our garden causes any device to lose wifi.
TVs struggle staying connected to ANY wifi channel, and devices are constantly getting booted from the wifi.
We didn’t have this issue on our ISP issued router.
I’m lucky in that most of my things (besides my Pixel 8 Pro) are using wired connections, but I’m constantly getting an earache from my family because of the wifi on the router. Even turning a wired PC on will degrade the WIRELESS wifi???
I’ve tried the stable update channels, and the beta, but I’m close to just flashing it with standard openWRT before returning it if there’s still issues.
thanks bud i am not anything like a heavy user i just want a good router and to use a quick vpn as i live in spain…i am a noob so i wouldn’t know how to use all these other programs..so i am still unsure whether to open the box and use it.. my old router is a Cudy 4G LTE Cat 18 WiFi 6 Router, up to 1.2Gbps, 4x4 MIMO, AX1800, OpenVPN, Wireguard, Zerotier, Cloudflare, IPv6, Removable Mobile Antenna, Dual SIM.. But useless as a VPN router destroyed my speed..it has allsorts of VPN’s but could never get to do VPN’s at all..
Kindly keep in mind that I am not employed by GL; the reason I am doing mod tasks here is simply because I have a strong affinity for both the company and the hardware.
Regarding the Flint 3, I would not recommend it to anyone at this time. I was having so many problems with MLO that I decided to sell it and purchase a Flint 3e instead (which does not have Wi-Fi at 6 GHz). The Wi-Fi issues drove me crazy, although the power of Flint 3 is incredible.
Maybe it will improve with the latest firmware; I can't tell.
Well, don't take my words as more than they are. It's just my experience, but my home setup isn't optimal anyway. Living in a German house with really massive walls breaks all Wi-Fi. But yeah, the experience with the Flint 3 MLO was not satisfying for me. Without MLO, it was a bit better.
I guess that the router is fine if we are talking about a smaller flat and a more optimal environment for setting it up. For me, it was the first GL router I wasn't quiet happy with.
if they do get those speeds can someone tell me if they are getting those speeds and with which VPN please ???
as i said i am a simple user nothing techy just plug and hopefully play all it has to do is good speed with a VPN.. I have not used wireguard before is it difficult to set up?? is there a cost??
If your a noob set it up with your isp connection then set up your vpn on the router. If you get stuck just start a conversation with Gemini or ChatGPT. They are both very helpful with these kinds of things. For the average Joe like yourself I think you will be happy with it. Folk that have a bit more knowledge and like to tinker and the ones that will find issues here and there.
The Flint 3 might be faster at very short range. (Basically when you are on the 6GHz band and in the same room as the router). But once the signal has to go through one or two walls then the Flint 2 is likely faster simply because the 6GHz signal cannot penetrate the walls, so you will fall back to 5GHz or 2.4GHz. When you are on these bands the Flint 2 should have better performance due to the fact that it has 4x4 MIMO for these bands, and the Flint 3 only has 2x2.
All that to day, it really depends on how much space your router needs to cover and whether or not there are walls in the way. In my case I tried the Flint 3 and it could not hold a stable signal ~50 feet away if one interior wall was in the way. This was unacceptable for me so I switched to the Flint 2 and have been happy with it.
Since you bought the Flint 2 I think you will be happy with it as well.
well i have the router connected and have paid for VPN with surfshark.as it is already built in..first mistake i couldn’t connect so i contacted their help desk only to be told that it hasn’t been fully tested for my flint2 so no VPN at the moment…now i have to find a way to get it to connect..bummer i have no idea what i am doing
well this is first time weather has been good enough to venture out in 2-3 months terrible storms..so hopefully i can make a start .i found a site for wireguard prices and now lost it because it has been so long
