GL iNet: Please commit to supporting the AR750S and the N300 through the 4.6.x firmware cycle

I have two GL iNet router models that are going End-Of-Support (EOS) within the next 6 weeks. My AR750S, which I use daily as my travel router, EOS date is: October 26th, 2024. My Microuter-N300, which is working as a VPN server, goes EOS on November 2nd, 2024.

Both routers were still being sold when the first announcements of the 4.x firmware were made on this forum, and within this forum, many commitments by GL iNet employees have been made that these devices would receive 4.x support.

In May, GL iNet posted on their blog:

Which is a commitment that almost all their currently supported routers, including these router models, would have at least beta 4.6.x firmware, by now. This is due to known security issues.

As of today, there are no beta or released 4.6.x firmware versions available for these router models. The N300 is still on 3.218 with no availability of 4.x, and the AR750S is on 4.3.x.

GL iNet has just released beta 4.7 firmware for 3 router models and has left every other router model they claim to support way behind.

I have heard from other users that I should just buy some new GL-iNet routers, but why make more e-waste in the world when the speed of these routers still meets my needs. These router models are smaller, lighter and use less power, so are greener, than any of the newer GL iNet router models. As I travel the world full-time, and live out of a suitcase: Size, weight and power matters, but so does security.

GL iNets own blog recommends that we all upgrade to 4.6 firmware. See:

What I am asking for myself and for other users of GL iNet routers going EOS soon, is that GL iNet commits to supporting all the models listed on the blog page through at least the 4.6.x firmware cycle. I don’t expect support forever, but I do expect stable 4.6.x firmware with the features listed on the blog pages. Seeing the slow pace of GL iNet getting 4.6.x out for their newer router models, I don’t expect that this firmware will be available and stable for a while, long after many of our routers goes EOS.

On the bottom of the GL iNet blog page is this commitment. I hope that they can live up to it.

Thanks for your interest in GL products.

About the AR750S and N300 you mentioned, as the hardware is quite old, the new GL SDK will need to verify and evaluate whether it can upgrade to 4.6. If they can, I will update the post.

We very much appreciate your attention. As you said, as long as these products are not in EOL, we will do our best to maintain them.

Since GL currently has many products, the firmware release may give priority to new products, but these older products will not be forgotten.
Our commitment to firmware updates for older (Close to EOL) products is to fix major bugs, some new features may not be updated for old products due to its hardware performance, if the hardware enough to update the newer SDK, we will sync there. Thanks.

@eric you've got more chance of an upgrade than my 2 Velicas

GL iNet has a history of abandoning products and firmware commitments. The Velicas looks like one of those abandon products :frowning:

In a blog post that is still online, GL iNet stated on May 29, 2024 that they planned to provide 4.6.x beta firmware withing 3 months for the following routers:

  • Creta (GL-AR750)
  • Convexa-S (GL-S1300)
  • Brume (GL-MV1000)
  • microuter-N300
  • Slate (GL-AR750S-Ext)
  • GL-SF1200

@bruce response is not encouraging, as it looks like the work has not even started. Very, very sad :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

:joy::sweat_smile: That's a good one

It is not abandoning hardware when it is 5+ years old. Most consumer hardware is only supported for a couple of years. Seriously - just upgrade.

There is the v4.6 alpha firmware of the AR750S, here for small range test:

@bruce, I travel fulltime, and I use my ar750s daily around the world, so I am not looking for alpha or beta firmware, as I need a stable router. All I want is stable, released 4.6.x firmware with the features that GL iNet listed in the blog post dated May 29, 2024, for all the routers that are listed in that post.
