GL-MT3000 (Beryl AX) Repeater 5Ghz Doesn't always Connect

I've tried many things to fix the issue, yet nothing works. The only "working" thing is to restart the modem entirely. Once the connection drops for any number of reasons, it then refuses to reconnect again.

I've even upgraded to Preview Plan Version, 4.6.3 Release3 (2024-07-25 6:31:41)
Issue still happens.
2.4Ghz works just fine with reconnect.

I tested my other travel router, GL-A1300 (Slate Plus) latest preview version and have no issues with it.

Hi,

Please try to this version to see if it works now?

https://dl.gl-inet.com/router/mt3000/

Issue still happens, refuses to reconnect to a 5ghz network after disconnect (by user input) -or random connection dropped but now it also affects 2.4Ghz.

The only fix now is to erase the wifi profiles and reconnect manually. Restarting the router does not work.

I've recorded what is happening

What is the surrounding environment? Do you know the uplink router?

The first time it happened was at a McDonald's Lobby, figured that it was just a crappy network thing they had going. Didn't bother me too much, but then I went to a Tacobell next day and same thing happened again figured as much it was just some proprietary network thing some corps are using. I went home and tested on my own network and observed the same thing.

This had(has) not happened with my GL-A1300.

I tried my main wifi modem TP-Link AC1900 same thing happened, then I tried a portable hotspot device "MiFi m3000" same thing happened.

I remember back in May through August of 2023 this never happened with the device. I stopped traveling for a bit because of covid in my area started to go up again, so i packed the device away. I started recently going out again so brought the device out with me and ever since i upgraded the firmware it's been nothing but issues.

As for my home environment; My house is pretty wide open, my main wifi box is in the same room as me when testing, like 3ft away from me, as for possible interference, I had my heater disabled since the start of summer so that doesn't emit 1970s emp waves, my a/c unit is on the other side of my house about 20ft away which was not running at the time.

Thanks for your test.

Could you please also post the syslog during this test process, I assume the syslog will bring us detail to analyze.

may I know what firmware version of the MT3000 use at that time?

I didn't see your reply at the time. I did a factory reset of my device on the latest firmware and still was an issue on 4.6.3, i found a beta firmware file from 2023-12-25

So i downloaded openwrt-mt3000-4.5.0-1225-1703489422 and it worked
4.5.0 Release6 Compile Time: 2023-12-25 6:59:58 (UTC+00:00)

Video of 4.5.0 beta working

I upgraded to 4.5.16 from stable and this worked too, Video of the upgrade from 4.5.0 beta to 4.5.16 stable keeping settings

Upgrade from 4.5.16 to 4.6.2 Stable, 4.6.2 stable has issues with repeater

Log files from 4.6.2
logread.tar (211.5 KB)

From your logread file, v4.6.2, the repeater is able to connect the SSID 'M3000-833E', and obtain the IP from M3000-833E. Does it mean that you can connect only by forgetting and then manually connect with the password?

Yea I need to delete the connection and then reconnect with password again. If the connection drops or If I manually switch APs it no longer connects to previous connections that are saved. When removing the connection and then manually reconnecting with the password it will work.

For example, I connect to McDonald's wifi, it saves.the connection and it works just fine. If I somehow get disconnected, it no longer reconnects. I need to erase the wifi connection and manually connect.

From the syslog, seems the ‘pmkid’ field is causing repeater connection.

  1. Please confirm what the WiFi encryption method is configured.
  2. Whether if activated the 802.11r protocol.
  3. If switch the encryption method to WPA2-PSK in the primary device, does it work ok?

Currently my wifi modem is set to WPA3/WPA2 Transition

  • It supports Wi-Fi 6: a/b/g/n/ac/ax (2.4GHz and 5GHZ)
  • Security: WPA / WPA2 / WPA3
    • None
    • WPA2 Personal PSK (AES)
    • WPA/WPA2 Mixed Mode
    • WPA3/WPA2 Transition

I changed my Primary AP to use WPA2 Personal PSK (AES) and it worked using latest stable 4.6.2

I tried on Preview version 4.6.3 and also worked

Both times worked when disconnecting and reconnecting it.

When connecting to my other AP set in WPA3/WPA2 Transition Mode, it doesn't work unless I remove the connection then re-add it

This wasn't the case in 4.5.0 and 4.5.16, they worked fine with WPA3/WPA2 transition

Thanks for your confirmation, shared these to R&D.

Update: @cyberofficial please try this temporary firmware one more time, Unique Download Link | WeTransfer

  1. Added WiFi driver debug information.
  2. Based on the WPA2/WPA3 mode of the primary AP, try to connect and export the syslog.
  3. Based on the WPA3-SAE mode of the primary AP, to see if it has been shooted, and export the syslog.

Thanks in advance.

Error Still Happens,

Error does not happen
logread (8).tar (223.5 KB)

Using WPA2/WPA3 mode doesn't allow reconnect,
Using WPA3-SAE does allow reconnect.

My Primary WiFI router doesn't support broadcasting WPA3-SAE by itself so I used the GL A-1300 to broadcast the WPA3-SAE

Wifi Names for the log:
M3000-833E -- used WPA3/WPA2 Transition
GL-A1300-b88-5G -- used WPA3-SAE

Thanks for your corporation.
Please try this test firmware in the MT3000 and repeats with your primary router to test.

Update point:
Before the repeater interface is connected by WPA3 if primary requires WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode, now the repeater interface changed to WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode to connect.

Hello still no luck.
After performing an upgrade with out keeping settings, issue is still present

I rebooted the router and still couldn't connect

The WPA2 AP I set up works great on reconnecting, but trying to connect to the WPA3/WPA2 Transition Network still doesn't.

May I know if the MT3000 try to repeat the A1300 (A1300 WiFi in WPA2/3 mixed), is it connected?

We try this in the lots of devices with their WiFi in WPA2/3 mixed, and MT3000 repeat them.
(Example) AXT1800, WPA2/3:

MT3000, repeater, after reboot:

R&D assume the MIFI (m3000) Wi-Fi OTA interface or interaction issue, which something differents.

Could you mind to share your MT3000 with us? we would like to capture the WiFi OTA log, the MT3000 require to connect a WAN to access the Internet and so we remote the MT3000 via the GoodCloud, did you have WAN Internet access method now?
