GLX3000 internet keeps hanging

Recently signed on with T-Mobile home internet. Bought GLX3000 to improve signal/performance.

Have had an issue with internet routinely going out and not coming back until I reboot or power cycle the GLX3000 router. Have tried bank masking, tower locks, etc. Same thing happens each time making me wonder if this is the router issue and not on T-Mobile's side as the problem occurs with different towers.

I also don't use the wifi feature of the router (have Eero mesh network), and turned the wifi off.

Any ideas? Bad unit?

Have you changed any settings other than the band masking, tower locks, etc? My understanding is that using a TMHI sim in the X3000 is not 'plug-n-play' and there are settings that need to be changed. Plenty of information out there on how to do this, both on these forums and elsewhere.

Can you share the firmware version of your 5G modem (not router)? I had exactly the same issue with T-Mobile in GL-X3000.

The only thing I had to change was the IMEI of the X3000 to match the TMHI gateway. Write this down somewhere you change it though, in case you need to change it back in the future.

I’m experiencing the same issue. I’ve tested firmware versions 4.4.13, 4.7, and 4.7.1 extensively. The SIM configuration is correct and IPv6 is properly enabled.
From my testing, using encrypted DNS or AdGuard Home isn’t causing the disconnections. However, whenever I use WireGuard VPN, severe network congestion and packet loss occur after a few hours of use, eventually leading to complete webpage loading failures. The only fix is to restart the router or reconnect the network.
Interestingly, even with WireGuard just configured but not enabled, network issues still develop over time. Currently, I’m running firmware 4.7.1 with TTL set to 65, IPv6 and AdGuard Home enabled - all working fine without VPN. I suspect there might be an issue with the VPN/WireGuard implementation, though I can’t pinpoint the exact cause.
I previously used Tailscale alongside WireGuard, and support suggested this combination might be problematic. However, after a firmware reset and using WireGuard alone, the same issues persisted.

Same issue here with no resolution or much of anything. Always need to reboot or switch the selection between cell 1 and 2 and back again which takes about the same time anyways. Went back a couple firmwares and even to the 4.7 with no change. Also did a full factory reset.

I just got my GL-X3000 within the last month, but I have had T-Mobile Home Internet since 2022.

I have been lurking here for a while and decided to make this my first post in an effort to possibly help. I am far from an expert, but thought I would share my experience with T-Mobile Home Internet and the GL-X3000.

I am assuming you were already successfully using the T-Mobile issued modem/router prior to setting up the GL-X3000 and it was located in the best possible spot?

Here is some information about my setup, not sure if it will help anyone or not. If anyone has any tips for me I would appreciate it!

Previous setup:

T-Mobile Home Internet Unlimited, Arcadyan KVD21. Connected to B66 & N41. SINR for me was always 20+. Never any outages or reboots, I WFH and game on Xbox without issue.

Modem was located up high on shelf in a second story room, I can see the tower from a nearby window. Tower is 0.65 miles away.

Current setup:

GL-X3000, stock antennas. Located in the same spot where the Arcadyan KVD21 was.

Firmware: 0701release1 (4.7.1)

Modem: RM520NGLAAR03A04M4G (was previously using RM520NGLAAR03A03M4G, both worked about the same)

IMEI updated to Arcadyan KVD21 IMEI (NOT the SIM Card IMEI)

Currently no band masking or tower lock, connected to 5G SA (Band 41).

+QCAINFO: "PCC",521310,11,"NR5G BAND 41",765
+QCAINFO: "SCC",501390,3,"NR5G BAND 41",1,765,0,-,-

  • Band 41
  • dl_bandwidth 90M
  • RSRP -70 Excellent
  • RSRQ -10 Excellent
  • SINR 33 Excellent

APN: fbb.home, nothing else modified.

IPv6: NAT6

I also have eero Pro 6 in bridge mode. GL-X3000 Wi-Fi is turned off. Cable is plugged into LAN on GL-X3000. I have two other eero Pro 6 wireless.

Using SQM (fq_codel + simple.qos), interface is br-lan, egress (250000) and ingress (40000) are reversed. Fq_codel seems to work better than cake for me.

Bufferbloat is still C, but better than F. Cloudflare Speed test results are Great/Great/Great.

Also using Adguard Home. Average processing time says 2ms.

DNS set to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1, Parallel requests.

DNS Blocklists (97% on Test Ad Block - Toolz):

AdGuard DNS filter, AdAway Default Blocklist, HaGeZi's Pro Blocklist

@CoffeePleeze Very detailed report you have posted. Not really sure how anyone is going to be able to help you or offer any additional advice for you because you seem to have in-depth knowledge of how to obtain all the pertinent information from your router as well as its configuration and setup. But, you are missing a very important piece of information that I would personally like to know. What kind of speed improvements do you have over the TMHI? Inquiring minds want to know,

@EmergMD I had the exact same issue. Called support, swapped out router with a new one and never had the issue again. I'm guessing a bad unit. Symptoms kept getting worse and worse until eventually the router would not even boot until I powered off the unit and rebooted a half dozen times. I have seen a number of people reporting the same and I believe there are defective routers that passed initial quality control checks but fail down the road.

I would say that the raw speed increases were not as dramatic as I had hoped, but I have been able to improve the quality (via SQM), which is more important. As I mentioned I have always had a pretty decent signal due to tower proximity, modem location in my home, etc, and it seems that my tower must not suffer from congestion since I don't notice much real-world difference throughout the day, even when using the T-Mobile modem.

My main reasons for going with an aftermarket router was to use Adguard Home and discontinue use of a pair of Raspberry Pi Zero Ws running Pi-hole, and to utilize SQM on the modem. I considered going with an SDX75 based modem which would have certainly improved speed, but ultimately, I was not willing to shell out the extra $$$.

With my iPhone 14 Pro connected to 5GUC in the same location as the modem can get 1000-1200Mbps download, 100Mbps upload with 15ms. Latency all over the place of course and dropped packets (1-3%).

I was able to band lock n25 but only by itself and it was 15M. I didn't do much testing with it. I was hoping to lock n41 and n25 together but haven't had success.

I noticed since getting this modem and utilizing SQM, Xbox multiplayer has improved somewhat.

Thanks for sharing the detailed report!

Could you also share the speed test results from Cloudflare? I’m using a T-Mobile tablet plan with PCC N41 and SCC N25, and my speeds are roughly 250-350 Mbps for download and 60-80 Mbps for upload. While I’m located quite close to a tower, I suspect there may be a bottleneck in the connection.

For anyone experiencing hanging T-Mobile connections, I recommend trying the R01 firmware available at the following link.

In my extensive testing with the R03 firmware, I encountered daily connection losses. The only workaround I found was resetting the modem connection using a cron scheduler (in every hour LOL). However, after switching to the R01 firmware, the issue was completely resolved. My router and modem have been running without a single interruption for 1+ months.

Update:
I only saw these replies several days after posting due to an email push issue with my iPhone.

To summarize: cloned imei, set apn , upgraded firmware to latest and connected to T-Mobile without much problem. Worked for a while then internet started hanging. Tried every setting I could think of to see if it would fix it (ipv6 on/off, band masking, tower locking, downgraded firmware, etc. still internet locking up every hour or two. Wife and family were ready to throw me out.

I have packaged up the unit and am shipping it back to Amazon for a refund. Having a $400 paperweight that causes me headaches is no fun. This company needs to get this problem sorted out. I’m super disappointed after reading all the positive reviews of this model. I’ll be posting my negative experience.

I’m also a bit frustrated with t mobile home internet as their stock router occasionally has internet stoppages for minutes (? Due to tower congestion ). At least their issues don’t require manual reboot of the unit.

Likely will surrender soon and go back to cable internet, which is the only other option at my residence . Oh well, I tried. Good luck to others.

Hi @EmergMD , we are investigating the problem and suspect it may be related to modem. If you like, you can email to support@glinet.biz for support and further assistance. Don't worry about the Amazon return process, we can also help you with the return/replacement process if needed.

Make sure to mention in your review that you are using a non-supported T-Mobile Home Internet sim in the router.

How have you determined it is a "non-supported T-Mobile Home Internet sim" and why do you think that is the issue itself? If T-Mobile has turned on some other feature like geofencing or the like, the sim is very binary - works or doesn't. However, a hardware issue or modem firmware issue could cause these issues. Hopefully @EmergMD will give support a chance to help address the issue, but if not, totally understand returning the product. It is not working the way they would like it to. If I am being honest, I considered returning mine as well due to similar issues.

It's my understanding that the TMHI sim needs special attention to get it working in devices other than the T-Mobile supplied devices. It is my assumption that GL-iNet only supports standard 'data' sims meant for use in various devices without special settings. I 100% agree with you that this could be (and probably is) a hardware or modem issue as you suggested. It was not my intention to place blame on the TMHI sim. My main point to the OP was to not point blame at the device until it's been fully determined that the device is at fault especially when using a sim that needs extra love and attention.

On the geofencing topic I thought I read that they were going to start enforcing it and was anticipating seeing a bunch of post here about it but in the absence of those posts I'm assuming T-Mobile has not turned it on yet.

Perfect! I switched R01 from R03, the issue was likely fixed, I haven’t experienced any interruption for at least 3 days!

Can you post a link to the R01 firmware? I didn’t see it in the previously posted link.

Thank you.
