How to use GL-MT6000 NAS for Mac Time Machine

Can I use an attached HDD for Time Machine on my MT-6000 with firmware 4.8.3? The only information I can find is Use Hard Disc on GL-MT6000 as Time Machine and it doesn’t really answer the question.

I have formatted a partition on the attached HDD as APFS, which is required for Time Machine. The router lists its format as ERR FS. My Mac can see it and read from it, but has problems writing to it.

Should I just modify /etc/samba/smb.conf.template4 as described in the article linked from the above post?

I had thought Time Machine required APFS, but exFAT appears to work. I had added all of the lines from the linked article, which included fruit:time machine = yes. I suppose the other lines can’t hurt?

For others reading this, adding just fruit:time machine = yes worked. I had to reapply after updating the firmware.
