On my Samsung Tizen TV, I'm able to change the DNS settings to get around geo-restrictions for streaming media. Originally, I had the TV connected to the ISP-supplied router as I was just testing and learning OpenWRT and GL.iNet's product in a smaller room in the house. I decided to bring the Beryl AX to the living room and have more devices connected to it. Everything connects and all, but it doesn't seem like the TV can use a custom DNS. I'm not seeing some of the things that I used to see. What's going on and if there is a way to let my TV use a custom DNS while connected to the Beryl AX with a VPN on?
So your TV has it's own, on board settings for a DNS provider? Yeah, the Beryl AX is probably intercepting the requests & pushing it thru its own. IDK what firmware version you're on but check the toggles in GL GUI -> Network -> DNS. I suspect 'Override DNS Settings of All Clients' may be on.
The latest builds of the GL firmware should have the abilty to exclude clients from accessing the VPN through policies (aka 'split tunnelling').
Yeah, it does. I can go to the TV's network menu and change the DNS. Everything was working until I connected the TV to the Beryl AX. That's why I suspected the VPN may be the problem, but I'm not an expert here.
I turned the override DNS settings off, but it doesn't appear to be working.
GL.iNet is now allowing split tunnelling at the DNS level?! I'm a newbie at this, but how would I configure this?
No but I think it'd be easiest to set your preferred DNS provider for ea. of your VPN tunnels/confs & then set the same DNS on your TV to act as the primary DNS within the Beryl AX.
As mentioned by 9b9e..., once the 'Admin Panel - Network - DNS - Override DNS Settings of All Clients' option is disabled, Beryl AX will not affect the custom DNS setting of the TV.
If the TV's custom DNS still does not work, we think that your VPN service provider may be overriding the unencrypted DNS request on their end.
In this case, your idea (learn from your other posts) - using the Adgurad Home to filter ads, and use encrypted DNS as upstream will be good one.
The following is the recommended configuration:
Admin Panel - Network - DNS, enable Override DNS Settings of All Clients and Allow Custom DNS to Override VPN DNS to ensure that all the unencrypted DNS requests from clients will be handled by the Beryl AX.
Applicaton - AdGuard Home, enable the Enable AdGuard Home and AdGuard Home Handle Client Requests to ensure that Beryl AX will forward the unencrypted DNS request to AdGuard Home.
Fill in only your ControlD DoH address on the upstream DNS servers to ensure that all DNS requests will be forwarded to your encrypted DNS to bypass geo-restrictions. Remember to click the Apply button at the bottom to save your settings. Note: Do not enter any other DNS address, otherwise bypassing geo-restrictions may not work since the DNS request will be forward to other DNS server not ControlD.
Check: Go to the AdGuard Home settings page - Query log, move the mouse/arrow to the ? button on Response. The DNS server should be your ControlD DoH address.
Will, thank you so much for your time and effort in trying to help me figure this out. It's definitely a good sign that your company will try its best to support its customers. I will give this a try when I get home.
In the meantime, did you contradict yourself? I think I have "Override DNS Settings of All Clients" enabled and it doesn't work. I'm thinking my problem may be the second and third upstream servers. I haven't tested with them removed yet. I think you're saying it's off in the beginning and then later you say turn it on?
When ControlD DNS is used in conjunction with a VPN, AdGurad Home, things get complicated.
Let's start with the simplest case.
When a device is configured with unencrypted custom DNS, let's say 1.1.1.1, then its DNS requests are sent to 1.1.1.1 through ISP network.
When the device is providing network through a router, such as a Beryl AX. If you want the Beryl AX to provide some advanced DNS-based features, such as Host, you need to enable the 'Override DNS Settings of All Clients' option in order to allow the Beryl AX to take over the DNS requests from its clients. After the request is processed by Beryl AX, it will be sent to the corresponding server via ISP according to the DNS related configuration of Berly AX.
When VPN is enabled, the DNS request will be sent to the VPN server first and then to the corresponding DNS server.
That's why, at the beginning, 9b9e... suggests that you turn off the 'Override DNS Settings of All Clients' option.
However, after test disabling the option, the TV still can't bypass geo-restrictions properly, indicating that the problem is not with Beryl AX, but with the VPN service provider.
Then later, you mentioned using AdGuard Home + DoH to keep DNS from being modified from VPN service provider.
Obviously, this requires the use of some of Beryl AX's advanced DNS features, so I suggested above that enable the 'Override DNS Settings of All Clients' option to allow Beryl AX to take over all DNS requests from its clients. And forward DNS requests to AdGuard Home.
Will! It worked!!! You're right!!! Thank you so much! I think somehow having multiple upstream DNS servers caused the problem. Now it's respecting the DNS settings in my TV and it's fully taking advantage of my ControlD's paid subscription! You're the man!
Just got more questions after you solved the main problem because it's related to this.
Since I set the Beryl AX to use ProtonVPN, I'm assuming all devices that are connected, will by default use Proton's own DNS. Since I added ControlD's IPv4 DNS setting to the TV, given what you said and the fact that things work, the TV is fully ignoring Proton's DNS and using ControlD's DNS? How will this affect the TV's privacy and security? On the one hand, I have configured ControlD to utilize several blocklists and I can see Samsung's domains are being blocked. How do I know if all Samsung's trackers are blocked? I don't see any ads so I do know it's working to a certain degree, but could there be hidden trackers that could be getting through? How can I verify this? Since the TV can't use IPv6, DoH, or DoT, how do I further enhance the security since it's using IPv4? I do like that the TV is now connected using a VPN, but the IPv4 is concerning me since it's not encrypted and ControlD reminds me of it in its settings page.
For my phone's like the Pixel 9 Pro XL or the iPhone 16 Pro Max, when it's connected to the Beryl, will it use Proton's DNS or ControlD's DNS? How can I verify this?
Both phones also have Mullvad VPN installed. I know it's dumb to use a VPN to connect to a VPN, but for educational purposes, I need to know and understand how this works. I don't have the Mullvad app set up to use a custom DNS. The app by default will use Mullvad's DNS and I have multihop enabled. When I turn on Mullvad's VPN, despite enabling the Beryl AX's setting to override DNS settings of all clients, which DNS will ultimately be used and how can I verify this?
I know I'm making this complicated, but I only want the TV and media streamer to use ControlD's DNS. For my smartphones and laptops, I actually want to use either Proton or Mullvad's DNS when they're connected to the Beryl AX. How do I ensure and verify this is the case?
Thanks again for your time and effort! Have a good day!
You should make a backup now that it works. GL GUI -> System -> Advanced Settings -> LuCI -> System -> Backup / Flash Firmware. IDK if it'll backup your AdGuard conf.
You'd have to watch your logs for an extended time but it may just be easier to put the TV on a VPN profile which has a GL GUI VPN policy to only communicate to specific domains... a whitelist, as it were.
Run from whatever VPN/cleartext client you need to check.
I'm having a bad day. My home lost power for about 7 hours today due to a transformer failure in the neighborhood. Now that the house is back up and running, this setup is no longer working.
The Samsung Tizen TV is no longer connected to the internet regardless of whether it's wirelessly or wired to the Beryl AX. I logged into the Beryl AX and it can detect the TV wirelessly or wired. In terms of speed, I see a download of 22.00 B/s and an upload of 6.00 B/s in the client page. I tried disabling the VPN. I've turned the TV on and off. I've rebooted the Beryl AX. Yet, there is still no internet. I'm using the same settings as last night when things were working.
Oh, fawk. It sounds like something might have been cooked in the power surge's 'backwash.' What happens when you use your MacBook instead? Can you go MacBook -> ethernet cable -> Modem -> WAN?
I don't have a MacBook or any other computer to test at the moment. There is the Internet as I'm using the WiFi network to post on this forum. I know the Beryl can use the Internet because I'm able to use my phone to connect to it to access the Internet. It's just the TV can't seem to connect wired or wirelessly. Yet, I can see a connection speed so I'm not convinced the router or TV is damaged.
Sorry; that's the slang coming out again. "Pull an IP" == "successfully get an IP assigned by the DHCP daemon upstream" (get an IP from the router).
You're on a phone, you say. Can you get to GL GUI -> System -> Log -> System Log -> [search box] -> 'netifd'? The 'network interface daemon' should turn up some info on what MACs are connecting to it. Also look up 'udhcpc', 'br-lan' & 'dnsmasq'.
You're going to have a hard time troubleshooting this without at least a laptop & preferably an Ethernet cable.
Why would it be more difficult to troubleshoot this with a phone than a laptop?

Here's an interesting thing that I noticed. Netflix is the only app on the TV that works. Every other app including YouTube fails to open. I just get a network error message from the TV.
