Mango MT300n-V2 with 5GHz WiF- MT7610u - T2U

Hi.

I’ve been using the Mango MT300N-V2 as my travel router for quite some time. It’s great, but the lack of 5GHz Wi-Fi is becoming increasingly noticeable. Has anyone managed to connect this router to a USB Wi-Fi adapter? How did the process go? From my research, it seems best to use an adapter with the MT7610U chipset, such as the TP-Link T2U v1. I apologize if this topic has already been covered, but I couldn't find anything. Has anyone tested it with a different chipset—perhaps one based on the MT7628?

We do not have relevant experience with this, so unfortunately we may not be able to provide similar assistance.

In addition, you may need to flash Vanilla OpenWrt in order to install the required Wi-Fi driver kmod.

Thanks for the reply. I’m looking for an immediate solution. I’m currently testing a setup involving installing that Wi-Fi card in the Mango router, combined with AI. Finding a suitable card with the MT7610U chipset was the hardest part, though. The results are promising. As for the Mango 2—is it possible to get one for real-world testing?

I was able to add a USB adaptor on Shadow, under 3.x firmware, and even put in a request for limited support for doing this, but it went nowhere.

The problem is GL iNet firmware is normally based on an old version of OpenWrt, and is tied very tightly to their hardware, so if you add anything it does not expect, and get it to work, it normally breaks on the next incremental firmware update.

If you want to do this, I would move to generic Openwrt, and give up on GL iNet. The RTL8821AU chipset is supported in OpenWrt 25.12

Unfortunately, the testing list for Mango 2 has already been finalized, so you may need to wait until the pre-order phase to obtain the device.
