Meet Flint 2 (GL-MT6000 )

Thanks, ChatGPT

But yeah, mostly correct. I would add that using GL-iNet Firmware is recommended if you don’t know anything about networking, wi-fi and stuff - and you don’t want to learn about it.

This should be ā€œdefaultā€ for any device from any manufacturer. GL-iNet devices works out of the box with much simplier interface than OpenWrt with Luci have.

I also would add to it that devices might behave better with the GL-inet firmware. Those generally should be able to get the most out of the devices.

For example take a GL-A1300 with GL-iNet’s firmware and GL-A1300 with stock OpenWRT. Compare their wifi speeds and you will notice the stock OpenWRT does not work as well. You can get it better, but that requires creating some alternative build with OpenWRT’s firmware selector tool.

Yup, that is the difference between fully opensourced devices and partially or fully closed devices.

I’m a fan of the GL-iNet model of layering their software on top of OpenWrt and actively developing the hardware. That is partly reflective of the very active and responsive efforts by the OEM to address issues; I felt differently with my older Asus routers over the years before I got onto the Merlin platform so I had them all on dd-wrt.

I think partly that an active user base of relatively sophisticated users is helpful in giving them feedback; someone on plain OpenWrt is less useful to them, I imagine. But folks in the field can use their routers in ways they can’t readily reproduce or perhaps even imagine, and a user of one hardware model can provide feedback for all the models. Then the OEM can provide more effective feedback to Openwrt.

Yep…That’s what I’m going to do once I receive my Flint2…That way it’s easy to switch back and forth from the GL.inet Firmware to the Open-WRT firmware (Just backup your config in each). That way I can just quickly configure my Flint2 with the GL.inet firmware…back it up…Then flash with the OpenWRT sysupgrade and start configuring…In the interim while getting everything working in OpenWRT I can always flash back to the GL.Inet Firmware to do streaming or whatever easily using the GL.inet UBoot…Then when I want to work on the OpenWRT configuration again just flash back to the OpenWRT and restore the backup there…Much better than having to use TFTP which can be a little tricky (I used to have to do that when running DD-WRT on another router and one of Brainslayer’s builds would brick the router)…
Anyway it’s a fun and learning process to figure things out…But for those that just want it to work then sticking with the stock firmware is fine and allows you to get on with your desired pursuits.

hardware off loading is enabled here with original firmware. But is it in openwrt snapshot. Possibly not?

I wonder the native software is going to be better performing rather than openwrt ?. Any thoughts…

Well that would kill it for me as far as Open-WRT…The reason I left Asus routers was because they at first didn’t support Wireguard at all…Then when they did support Wireguard their hardware offloading was disabled so they basically topped out at 350Mbps on Wireguard on the new routers (Possibly a little higher with their very latest models now). If the Flint2 can really deliver 900Mbps as advertised on Wireguard then you are now up to near what could only be achieved with a dedicated PC router before (Although the NanoPi R6s can hit around 1300Mbps on Wireguard download but that’s using a proprietary FriendlyElec build of OpenWRT as it is not officially supported on OpenWRT).

If you install a sysupgrade from Openwrt. Does the Glinet UI still work ?

No, GL-iNet UI is only part of the GL-iNet firmwares.

OpenWRT firmwares comes with just Luci (That advanced settings panel).

Two different things, I think. They added wireguard but had to disable acceleration so the routers couldn’t manage a 1GB internet connection. In Merlin now they have figured out how to do both, but wireguard is still topped out at 350 or so. OpenVPN much less, because the Broadcom isn’t compiled against a new enough kernel. The Flint 2 is pretty darn close to 900 for me.

Finally my order start delivery. But I can’t see information about customs fee…

Delivery to UK

It applies to UK:

You will not have to pay anything to the delivery company to receive goods worth less than Ā£135 unless they’re gifts over Ā£39 or excise goods (for example, alcohol and tobacco).

Oh brilliant  my order over £200

Unfortunately that isn’t accurate, since the seller didn’t collect VAT. So FexEx will need to pay that for it to clear customs and then you’ll owe them.

The VAT rate is 20%, so you’re looking at Ā£20-30 for that and then an additional Ā£4.25 - Ā£12.75 for FedEx’s disbursement fee.

As long as the customs declaration form lists each item and it’s value correctly then the import duty fee should still be Ā£0. So you’d just be paying the VAT and disbursement fee.

So it’s a good way to create a FedEx account now and enter your credit card information - so you will save the disbursement fee.

Yep. That’s what I done a few days ago, so hopefully it’ll help.

Weirdly the FedEx website doesn’t give me the option to enable FedEx AutoPay, but when I registered it said that I’ll save on international shipping after I gave them my card details.

Im expecting mine in on Thursday this week, im in the UK, I spoke to FedEx today about import fee’s etc, they stated that you will be invoiced for it (if you even have to pay any) a couple of weeks after the item is delivered, I paid $109 for it which works out to approx Ā£85 GBP.

I have to disagree with you, according to UK regulations:

Goods worth £135 or less in total:

If you bought the goods yourself and they are not excise goods, the seller will have included VAT in the total you paid.

You will need to pay VAT to the delivery company if the goods are:

  • gifts sent to you by someone else and worth more than Ā£39
  • excise goods

You’re reading it wrong as you’re mixing sections.

This is why AliExpress started collecting VAT on orders in 2021.

What you’re saying applies to only the duty. And that’s why if you go to any duty calculator website it’ll list the duty at Ā£0 and the VAT at Ā£20+.
