My understanding is that SFP+ sockets should be backwards compatible but, as always, there will be exceptions.
From what I gather, the light wavelength is a factor for specific services and the 1Gb/s module I’ve used has a specific send and receive wavelength that I’ve not found with SFP+ modules.
Other than that, the router just needs to have VLAN 100 set up, for the service and it then works perfectly with my ISP.
For the cost of the module and a length of fibre, I’ll happily check to see if it works.
I used a ‘generic’ compatible BiDi, from FS.com with a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 12. I’ll buy exactly the same one for the Flint 4 and be sure to post up if it works or not.
There are already some youtube videos showcasing the Flint 4, so “influencers” are starting to receive the Flint 4 for reviews, so…. I can only say:
Come on GLiNet … at least open the PRE ORDERS please.
I'm dying for the preorder to start. I don't need an influencer to convince me to buy the Flint 4. GL.iNet already have my support! They listened and gave the Flint 4 2GB of RAM!
Meet Flint 4, 2 Gigs of RAM and OpenWrt 21.02-SNAPSHOT… Never commit to modern, secure, updatable firmware, try the beta and see if fixes your issues! Also keep on using licenses without giving any credit. Before you say “Just flash pure vanilla” what is the point of paying for the device if you are skipping the GL UI feature-set then?
Seriously how much do you think they can charge for the same thing over and over again and call it an upgrade? Why not put extra thought into what matters to power users, nobody asked for a touchscreen, do you flick your hot touchscreen in a closet? Greatful for the SFP port, however, it has absolutely zero 10Gbps LAN ports. That single 10Gbps port is a combo port. You cannot use the SFP+ port for your WAN and the RJ45 port for your LAN.
How about wireless? Look at all those antennas! The Flint 4 physically drops spatial streams on the 2.4GHz band. It is a ~40% downgrade in maximum raw link rate compared to a Flint 2. What about 5Ghz? Another literal hardware downgrade. To cut costs, power draw, and physical antenna space, they reduced the 5GHz radio capability down to 4323 Mbps to squeeze in that 6Ghz, and have 95% of your devices get less bandwidth and antenna array support now.
Sorry but this is purely a marketing device, and not a leap like what was seen with Flint 1 to Flint 2. If you are still interested in buying one in the states GL.iNet has not been granted FCC certification for the Flint 4 either, so you will be waiting a bit.
I’m not trying to be negative, it should just be clear what you are not seeing at the price they will announce. Ridiculous to think that earlier spec reports said it came with 1 GB of RAM before some backlash made them change course. Who the hell is going to use a 64 GB EMMC device with 1 GB of RAM, much less 2? What year is it? Match the generation of the number and give it 4!
You should do more research before starting posting this kind of thing.
The ports are NOT combo, that was the assumption on CES months ago, they clearly said they were separated and both can be setup as Wan or Lan, also, there are already youtubers with access to the Flint 4 and you can watch the SFP+ETH tests here.
