Hi, I'm a school student in the UK choosing between the Beryl AX (MT3000) and Slate Plus (AC1300) to connect to university Eduroam networks, that non-negotiably require EAP. I do not have either router yet.
I need stable EAP access (with some kind of years-long future path) by ~July 2025.
I would prefer the Beryl AX due to its price to performance.
The following points will address the MT3000:
I've found that the Open-source OpenWRT firmware (4.6.x?) seems to support EAP?
I would like to use vanilla OpenWRT (relevant in question 2.)
If I use SYSUPGRADE to use vanilla OpenWRT, will this use the "Native" driver/firmware in (1.) and make EAP work? Or are the two steps separate (I have to install the open firmware then sysupgrade)?
I also hope vanilla OpenWRT will continue supporting the MT3000.
Will the "Native" firmware continue to be maintained far into the future?
Are there plans to make the "Native" firmware the default for future firmware versions?
Otherwise, are there plans to get EAP working in the "non-Native" firmware?
If the future of EAP on the MT3000 is uncertain, is it safer to buy the less-performant AC1300 instead?
I've got the MT-3000 working well with eduroam in repeater mode using 4.6.6-op24 firmware. I had an issue with constant dropouts from the eduroam wifi (but not to the MT-3000) which I solved by disabling the 'Interface Service Track' on repeater mode under the Multi-Wan menu. Does anyone know if the latest native firmware will support EAP eduroam repeater mode?
