Mt300n-v2 OpenVPN fails - Cannot resolve host address and Could not determine IPv4/IPv6 protocol

Dear All

I have ERROR message when OpenVPN (SaferVPN) fails without a reason, untill reboot, it will not connect to OpenVPN…

RESOLVE: Cannot resolve host address: uk1.safervpn.net:1194 (Try again)
RESOLVE: Cannot resolve host address: uk1.safervpn.net:1194 (Try again)
Could not determine IPv4/IPv6 protocol
SIGUSR1[soft,init_instance] received, process restarting
Restart pause, 20 second(s)

Please, help!

Does the Internet connection is available on the router without OpenVPN? You should have a try if it can resolve the url “uk1.safervpn.net” firstly.

Please execute nslookup uk1.safervpn.net on the command line.

hello kyson-lok - yes, internet connect works, and after reboot OpenVPN also starts without a problem. also, none out of 30 others vpn profiles work when it happens.

If you have internet without VPN then it’s your ovpn config file - contact your provider for help.
Also, check your user/pass combo.

glitch - I do not think this is the solution. here is why:

  • after reboot it works
  • it does not matter which profile I choose it gives the same error
  • no changes required to make it work again after reboot

any other thoughts?

When it fails it will restart. Will it connect 20 seconds later?

alzhao - when router reboots VPN connects as normal, however, without full router reboot VPN does not connect after 20 second - it is in the loop

Is it possible that you can send me your profile via private message?

You can set a temporary password if possible. I don’t have safervpn account

alzhao - configs are publically available with 30 days free trial offered

this is one of the config file:

cipher AES-256-CBC

Have Safer responded with help?
If you are just trialing, then chuck it and try another provider.

glitch - What is the reason you believe it is SaferVPN if after the router reboot it works?

I am using my AR750S v3.010 firmware and it connects. But I cannot connect to the Internet for some reason.

Didn’t try 300n-v2. If you don’t have 3.010 firmware please upgrade and try.

Alzhao, it seems you are not taking into consideration two things: 1. After reboot all works; 2. There is no new hardware version for my router appear to exist

Kyson-lok - any advise?

Firmware 3.010 for mt300n-V2 is here

https://dl.gl-inet.com/firmware/mt300n-v2/testing/

Upgrade without keep settings pls.

I did see that you said it worked about reboot. I didn’t try that.

Pls test v3.0 and we will help. 3.0 is under development so we focus more on 3.0.

Alzhao - thank you! Unfortunately I am on the road constantly and can not afford testing. I will rather reboot to “fix” it and then upgrade when you release it.

If it works after a reboot, then the router must be fine.
So, the connection must be stalling because of a server time-out or something. Are you sure they don’t have bandwidth or connection time limits on their trial?
Safer VPN should be able to help but if it were me, I’d try another provider (surely that’s the reason for a trial?).

Glitch - I have paid service and it was fine for a year. It started recently and intermittently.

Are you using the v2.271 firmware?

kyson-lok - yes, v2.271 firmware

A bit more troubleshooting:

  • when the OpenVPN fails as per above discussion, I found that when I reboot the upstream router the VPN comes back;
  • however, at times it doesn’t help.

I conclude: there is a problem with the way the upstream router handles OpenVPN protocol (will investigate), however, when it is persistent my MT300n-v2 gets in trouble and require reboot.
