New firmware version 4.8 being released for beta testing

Why marble still doesn't have 4.8 beta ?

I think the closed-source should be the main version, and the op24 open-source firmware should be updated as needed (a period of time).

The current op24 firmware is also relatively stable.
If you encounter any problems, you can create a new topic to discuss together.

R&D team is being scheduled, thank you for your patience.

May I ask, why do you think the “closed-source” should be the main version?
It seams for specific models, the feedback is, op24 is much better and secure.

Surely for Flint2 Op24 should be the main version. Any reason why not?

because op24 has terrible wifi coverage and performance compared to the op21 mtk regular one.
I have done several test in this year for compare op24 with op21 in my usage scenario (pretty big area, different rooms on 2 floors).
op21 has a better wifi coverage (and speed), 2.4 ghz is very strong and stable, 5 ghz is very good too (can reach the last room at the second floor).
gl.inet have done a very very very good work with the Flint 2.
please @bruce mantain the MTK as “main” stable version side by side the op24 if possibile.
thanks!

Isn't the problem that the superior drivers which are the closed source mediatek drivers are only compatible with older OpenWrt versions?

Imo mediatek should open source the drivers and make them compatible with the latest openwrt

I totally agree with you.

I was about to install the new 4.8.4 op24 Flint2 firmware but it’s vanished from the downloads section. Do we know why it has been pulled? Thanks

Edit: All snapshot builds have also vanished lol.

Was wondering the same thing

would be nice to get some communication from glinet when they pull op24 updates and the whole snapshot section!!!

I'll disagree :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

I’m using Vanilla OpenWrt since 24.10.1. It's stable and I didn't notice any WiFi issue.

Custom build by @pesa1234: here

II use the OP24 firmware for over a year and no WiFi problem. Good coverage and speed. The best WiFi router I ever had.

The tab of op24 did not remove any firmware, never release the 4.8.4-op24 firmware.

The snapshot firmware is compiling and uploading a new version of the firmware, during which the old version of the snapshot is deleted (so the tab of snapshot disappear), and today's snapshot 4.8.4 firmware is now released.

The upcoming release of op24 is the 4.8.3-op24 firmware.

@bruce ok thanks for confirming. This must have just been a mistake with whoever uploaded the firmware then. 4.8.4 appeared under op24 for a while then disappeared! Thanks Bruce.

Closed-source SDK consumes a little less development resources than open-source in terms of maintenance (just a little. But rarely does small lead to big).

It has been repeatedly mentioned that neither closed-source nor open-source is inherently superior; both drivers are excellent.
While the closed-source firmware might be based on an older version of OpenWRT branch, it remains highly secure, because we promptly identify and patch any vulnerabilities.

Please rest assured that op24 is valued by us, and we will update this branch from time to time.

Just discussed with the maintenance team that the system of download center has been updated, and there may some missing about the old release script, now has been fixed.

I was talking about op24 gl.inet version, not vanilla openwrt (i didn't try this).

In my environment the difference are big and noticeable.

Dear @bruce, the op21 closed and op24 open have a noticeable difference in wifi coverage with same settings and country regulation.

You can test with some wifi analyzer app. In difficult environments the op21 closed in my scenario perform better, specially in 5ghz wifi.

Anyway thanks for all the effort! :slightly_smiling_face:
