Questions about Spitz AX / GL-X3000 Wi-Fi 6 4G/5G Router – Use in a Camper

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to install the GL.iNet Spitz AX (GL-X3000) router in my camper van and have a few questions:

  1. WLAN as WAN
Can the Spitz AX – similar to the MUDI – connect to an existing Wi-Fi network and use it as an internet source instead of LTE?

  2. VLAN Configuration via LAN Port
Is it possible to configure multiple VLANs on the LAN port? Specifically, I would like to:

  • Have one VLAN for my internal network
  • One VLAN for a guest network
  • One VLAN used as WAN input (coming from a switch)
  1. Internet Source Priority
I’d like to set the following priority for internet sources:
  • 1. WAN via LAN cable from a switch (GL-X3000 acting as DHCP client)
  • 2. WAN via WLAN Client (like my Mudi in Hotels)
  • 3. LTE 1
  • 4. LTE 2
  • 5. Secondary WAN via DHCP client (e.g., another wired WAN connection, in case I don’t feel like swapping the SIM card from the MUDI)
  1. Power Consumption and Supply
What is the typical power consumption of the Spitz AX?
Can I connect it directly to my 12V AGM battery (voltage range 12V to 14.7V), or is a voltage regulator recommended?

I'd really appreciate any insights from someone who has used this router in a mobile setup or has experience with similar configurations.

Thanks in advance!

Edit:
I use the Navilock NL-400 antenna.
It has only 2x LTE and 2x Wi-Fi cables.
What are the other two antenna connectors on the GL-X3000 router for? Are they active?
Does the router fully match this antenna setup?

  1. Yes, WLAN can be a WAN connection.
  2. Yes, VLAN trunking works fine.
  3. Yes, you can prioritize internet connections in MWAN, even with load balancing - you can weight faster connections more heavily to cause more traffic to flow that way.
  4. I have not monitored power usage, but it is insignificant compare to my other loads in my RV. With the proper barrel connector, you can power directly from 12v.

Hi,

The cellular module supports 4x4 MIMO, so there are 4 cellular antennas, and they are all derived from the module.

So I can’t use my Navilock antenna with two connectors for this router?

Do you have an antenna you would recommend? Preferably with a GPS module?

I just hooked my X3000 up to a 12V LiFePO4 battery box which has a battery meter and shunt connected to it. At idle the X3000 draws ~4 watts and during a speed test with a WireGuard VPN running it averaged ~9 watts with a peak at 9.64. I do not have any devices connected to the USB port. I am using this cable to connect the X3000 to my battery. Amazon.com

thank you!

now i just need a new antenna with GPS to repace my old router.

Hi there,

what do u think about this antenna?

Right one?

Thank you!

I'm seeing about the same numbers on my X3000. Days when i'm not around and the router is the only thing running I see about 60-70 Wh usage per day

Will you use GPS function on the X3000 router?

No, i need the GPS for my android Radio with Navigation

Doubt it is useful in your case, but thought I would pass this along:

Now I’m all ears!

Is there an app for Android that allows this? So that TomTom, Google Maps and the like work?

Then I could query the RV GPS via WireGuard VPN… saves a GPS receiver.

I've not done this, so I am not sure, but most open source nav software will work with gpsd to get a signal.
