Slate 7 - 4.7.2 updating all the pre-installed opkg packages bricks the device into boot loop

Steps to reproduce

  1. Get a GL-BE3600 (Slate 7) decide
  2. Update the device to 4.7.2 stable firmware
  3. ssh into root
  4. run the following command
    # Upgrade all installed packages
    opkg update
    opkg list-upgradable | cut -f 1 -d ' ' | xargs -r opkg upgrade

Resolved by restoring to factory firmware via Uboot, but I still cannot understand why simply updating Opkg packages will break the whole system.

Plugins are 3rd party and not recommended to be updated, this goes for all glinet models

Just a few threads where this is mentioned

But I’m using the repo from glinet instead of the openwrt ones. I don’t think those packages in the official repo would originate from any third party.
And it’s quite wired that BE3600 was using the feed for BE9300 in the stock firmware:

Hello,

Have not reproduce the issue about the router brick in my BE3600. (Seems there is not any plugin updates)

Since the CPU architecture of BE3600 and BE9300 are the same, the plugins repo is the same one.

Could you please install the firmware v4.7.1 (without "keep settings") and try to execute the commands again

I ran into the same issue.
I updated all preinstalled packages (firmware 4.7.2), rebooted, device crashed (the progress bar was filled 3/4 on the display).
Loaded up firmware 4.7.2 via uboot, made all my personal settings, updated preinstalled packages again; this time I made no reboot, I reset the device via webgui (Reset Firmware -> Delete All and Reboot).
Made my settings again and have no updates available on Applications -> Plug-ins.

So a firmware reset won't affect installed/updated packages.

Dear dev's, do you recommend to update the plugins or just leave it at it is?

I've asked these questions before, but no dev has answered. If there are updates, it's because the plugins are already installed on the router. Some people say not to update, others say to update. The same thing happened to me. After updating the plugins, my router died... I did the U-boot and recovered my router. Everything is working perfectly now, but I didn't update the plugins.

Devs, please help us. Should we update the router plugins or not? Another question: when a new update is released, why don't the plugins come updated since the version is new?

Thanks
