Slate AXT-1800 issues with 5Ghz band

  1. I had the router for 24 hours now and I can't get anything connect to the 5Ghz band above 585Mbs. At times it will spike to 702Mbps but few moments later it will drop and sometimes it will show that a device is connected at 480Mbps.

  2. Cant connect to it when using any of the DFS channels on 5Ghz band.

Ive tried every combination in Wireless setting for 5Ghz band.
Restarted/rebooted, turned it off by unplugging power cord. Reset the router via external button and via settings several times. Flashed the firmware twice with latest 4.6.8.
Ive tried it at different distance; between 2 feet and 20 feet.
I even tried an Anker 45W USB-C power adapter/charger.

I have an Asus AC68U router and all my devices will connect to it and stay connected at 867Mbps. But the Slate router is having issues on 5Ghz band.

2.4Ghz band works with zero issues.

Should I return it or do I need to wait for a firmware update?

Thanks.

Please share your Wi-Fi settings and maybe, for comparison, the Wi-Fi settings of your ASUS as well.

Same channel 40, same channel bandwidth 80Mhz, Asus is set to N/AC and on GL router is set to AC/AX. I have tried every combo and every channel on GL router.

If I set Wireless Mode on GL/Slate router to AC via LuCi, nothing will connect to 5Ghz band and the router has to be hard reset. Even after manually changing it to AC/AX, router still has to be hard reset for 5Ghz band to work again.

Update:

I returned the first Slate AX and bought a second one.

Looks like there is an issue either with firmware 4.6.8 and firmware that it came with 4.5.16 Release 2. Or its a hardware issue with the router it self.

If more then one devices connects to the Slate AX router, the link connection drops to 585Mbps. Download and upload speeds also suffer in the process.

But if only 1 device is connected to Slate AX, link speed is 867Mbps and solid Up/Down speeds.

This is disappointing, since I don't have this issue with a 10 year old Asus AC68U running with OEM firmware.

Update 2:

I found another problem.
Im writing down notes while performing various tests.

The 2nd problem is USB 3.0 port. Any time i'm moving files to or from an HDD that is attached to USB 3.0 port, the link speed drops.

So looks like USB 3.0 port is not properly shielded on this router. I've seen similar issue here with another router but with 2.4Ghz radio. I'll have to get copper tape and cover up the USB port from inside.

As a test, I turned off 2.4Ghz radio on Slate AX and that didn't solve the problem.

USB 3.0 port is not properly shielded on Slate AX.
