Tailscale with Mullvad Exit Nodes

I am using Tailscale on a Mudi 7 and AX1800 Routers. So far it works great, the only pain using the the Exit Nodes: I subscribed to the Mullvad Add-On via Tailscale.

They DO work, but unfortunately, all exit nodes are shown a) unsorted b) IP only.

First, it would be great if the list would be sorted by IPs numbers and also had a typeahead/type-as-your-search function, because even if you know the IP, you have to search it ghrough hundreds of servers.

Even better, it would be nice if tailscale could show the reverse lookup of those exit nodes. Since a while, this is supported by tailscale via tailscale exit-node list, for example:

tailscale exit-node list --filter USA
 IP HOSTNAME COUNTRY CITY STATUS
 100.117.167.110 us-chi-wg-301.mullvad.ts.net USA Any -
 100.65.194.122 us-qas-wg-101.mullvad.ts.net USA Ashburn, VA -
[...]

And, as a very little suggestion, it would be great if the list would be automatically loaded when enabling routing through exit node. Currently one has to click reload.

The ultimate bonus would be if the exit node could be chosen through the touch screen of the Mudi router (in general, Tailscale is missing here despite being very popular).

PS: There was a similar discussion here: Tailscale Mullvad Inquiry by @Dominion7574 and several others which led to nowhere - I think GL Inet could very easily do better here.

Hi,

Thank you for your suggestions.

Yes, we have already optimized the Tailscale Exit Node display in the v4.9 firmware. Currently:

  1. In addition to the IP address, it can also display the corresponding device hostname and the geographical location of Mullvad Exit Nodes.
  2. Yes, searching by IP address / hostname / geographical location is now supported:

Regarding your other suggestions:

  1. Sort by Tailscale IP address — currently, we directly display the results returned by the Tailscale API without applying additional sorting.
  2. Automatically refresh the list when enabling Exit Nodes
  3. Display the related configuration on the E5800 screen

We will further discuss these suggestions with our product team and evaluate whether they can be implemented in future versions.

@will.qiu that is awesome news. Displaying the related configuration on the E5800 screen would be I guess the most high priority item on my open list. The sort doesnt really matter if you have a search and refreshing the list is a minor inconvenience.

Any idea when those features will be generally available on Mudi 7 and AX1800?

Hi,

Regarding the Tailscale Exit Node display improvements that have already been implemented in v4.9, Mudi 7 and AX1800 only need to wait until the release of v4.9.x or a later version.

However, we currently do not have a specific ETA available.

As for the new feature suggestions, we need to discuss them further with our product team first, so they are unlikely to be implemented in the short term.
