I figure it would be useful to have a master list of working KVM switches since I see quite a few topics about them (being of particular interest to me this is probably a biased dataset). I’ll start:
Make: Terived
Model: TH41-3
Working: Yes
Computers Supported: 4
Rack mount: No
Hotkey Support: Working with storage on the Comet disabled and port plugged into the KVM’s Keyboard Port (mouse works), broken without
I upgraded to a KVM switch with 8 ports (probably overkill) just because it’s rack mountable. Luckily, this one works just as well ([HOME], [HOME], [channel number] is the hotkey in this case). This switch is also nice in that it has two keyboard/mouse ports so I don’t need the little USB 2-port hub attached and then the Comet Pro arrives I can get rid of the HDMI splitter (see this post for details).
Make: MT-Viki
Model: MT-0801HK
Working: Yes
Computers Supported: 8
Rack mount: Yes
Hotkey Support: Working with storage on the Comet disabled and port plugged into the KVM’s Keyboard Port (mouse works), broken without
Note that there seem to be weird race conditions, sometimes rebooting the KVM switch causes the video and keyboard to stop working unless I disconnect the HDMI out and USB keyboard. This is a switch issue and not a Comet issue, it happens with my lapdock as well.
Do the shortcuts work if you setup a shortcut to do ctrl-ctrl-#-enter? I can’t seem to get this to work, but it does work if I bring up a virtual keyboard and do it.
Benefits over this KVM vs the other KVM I was trying in the post above, this one lets you change channels even if signal isn’t detected (so that you can wake a system up). I could not do this with the other one.
I currently don't have access to that model, but IIRC it behaved as my current one does - try omitting the . Note that you may not be able to use the Comet Hotkey feature for this, it seems to be sending simultaneous keys instead of a sequence separated by time.
Make: IOGEAR
Model: GCS1808 and GCS1816H
Working: Yes!
Computers Supported: 64 → 256
Rack mount: Yes, KVM have a ground wire to rack frames.
Hotkey Support: Working, all features, keyboard or mouse port ( you can leave a regular keyboard in one of the two ports )
As of the most recent firmware update IOGEAR rack mount GCS1816H and GCS1808 work. For the GCS1808 I can confirm that full cascading and hot-key access to the admin interface work. For >40 computers I can personally say that everything is working without issue. I don’t see why the same won’t be for the GCS1816H with cascading, but I will post if it does not.
I have not tried the storage, but I don’t believe it would work for either KVM if you have cascading enabled in or support more hosts then ports on a single KVM.
These are older KVM but are still in use. Some hosts have VGA out to the KVM and others have HDMI→VGA adapters. The GLKVM gets its video from a VGA to VGA/HDMI mirror.
Earlier versions of the GLKVM firmware wasn’t compatible with how the KVM handle keyboard/mouse translation but the latest firmware works!
Hello, I have the TH 41–3. The remote works through the gl-inet, gl-rm1pe the issue is I can’t get the shortcuts to work, I can if I hook a mouse directly up to the KVM th 41 in the mouse port. I’m sure I’m missing something in the settings. Could you share your exact settings and hook up and I’ll try to replicate,
Here's a post with a Miro diagram showing my setup:
In those days I had the following:
Virtual Storage needs to be disabled (this is still true of the Comet Pro, the KVM switches I've used get confused with a composite USB device).
The Keyboard/Mouse port on the Comet KVM needs to be connected to the KEYBOARD port on the KVM switch - not a USB hub port.
In my case I had to use a two-port USB hub since I'm also connecting a lapdock (a laptop-looking local keyboard/monitor/touchpad).
I also used an HDMI splitter between the KVM switch out and the Comet/lapdock - I no longer need this with the Comet Pro.
Note that you mentioned shortcuts, if you mean the actual Comet feature those won't work - they don't seem to handle key sequences well and will press all the buttons at once. The KVM switches often need something like "home, home, [number]" to switch while the Shortcuts feature delivers "home+home+number" as a single keypress. However, since I can never remember which of my switches uses "home" and which uses "right control" I do have shortcuts configured as a reminder - they just don't do anything.
I Bought Make: Terived Model: TH41-3 and i connected the a GL-RM1 in the keyboard port at the front of the kvm but it does not recognize the keyboard or mouse . I connect to the port labeled 3.0 it does detect the mouse and keyboard but i cant use the Hotkeys.. How did you get it to work?
You need to disable Virtual Media on the Comet, the KVM switch itself is only expecting a simple mouse/keyboard and doesn't know how to handle the storage.
