Constantly Loosing Cellular Connection on Spitz x3000

@Sanangtxan

Not only GL's firmware, I have been running a plain OpenWRT for over three weeks and the Internet has stopped multiple times. Every time it stopped, I had to login and restart the connection.I am suspecting that the modem module itself (RM520NGL) has some compatibility issues with OpenWRT.

Are you running latest module firmware RM520NGLAAR03A03M4G_01.201.01.201?

Yes, I am running RM520NGLAAR03A03M4G_01.201.01.201 , which seems to be the same as you mentioned above.

I am thinking that either RM520’s hardware or this firmware version is the cause for sudden internet interruptions. The later is more probable because before I upgraded to this version I recall having the modem for days without disconnecting.

I tend to agree, it's this firmware version. I went over 1 full year without experiencing the issue, and after upgrading to the R03A03 firmware, had the first instance within 1 week, and have been experiencing it every few weeks since then consistently.

It is not across the board, though. I am also using RM520NGLAAR03A03M4G_01.201.01.201 and don't have issues with dropped cellular connections where it is stored. Checking my smokeping page monitoring the VPN connection, I don't see any drops since it was brought back from our trip 4 weeks ago. It might be related to certain combinations of firmware, carrier, carrier tower, etc..

@packetmonkey thanks for confirming that it’s not common issue. Then could be the way we flashed it caused these hiccups? Can you please share the exact steps and flashing tool version you have used?

Maybe try using R01A08_203 firmware version? Its the equivalent of the R03A03_201 but still being retained in R01 branch. We also had problems with Simple Admin development (if you're familiar with it) on R03 branch due to some changed files.

I used the instructions shown on the gl support pages, just with this version of code. Nothing special. I did change the IMEI to match the TMO device the SIM is tied to, but otherwise fairly typical install. This is in my RV, so it does move around a bit. I have found some areas I have been in seemed to have more issues with stability than others (in cities). There are so many variables it is very difficult to really troubleshoot much.

New firmware versions available. Might worth to try:

Thanks for sharing the newest firmware. How trustworthy are they since they are hosted in mega.nz?

I downloaded just now and confirmed that the files are genuine.

Thanks @misuzu. If you can share how these files are certified through hash values or something else?

Interesting. Is there an R01 branch-based version of this newest firmware?

I believe the 03 versions are certified ones to be used for telecoms whereas 01 versions for stock users. But @misuzu is more knowledgeable about it and can elaborate more about it.

Indeed! I see it now at the link above

I have the same problem.
Modem firmware is RM520NGLAAR03A03M4G_01.201.01.201.
The problem for me is only with firmware version 4.4.9 and 4.4.10 (wich was retired).
With firmware 4.4.8 the connection is rock stable.

Youre indeed right. R03 branch usually includes "fixes" for certification and usually requested by the US ISPs. It does have file changes sometimes but unless youre using this modem as standalone, it wont really matter.

The QSDK for this modem isn't readily available and if you can get access on it somehow, Quectel will only give you the base files for a really old firmware. So modifying it is first, almost impossible, and second, somehow pointless.

Edited: OK, I hosted the file from mega.nz somewhere myself and then followed the steps at this link to update firmware to the latest R01 version above. It worked fine. We'll see how it does...

hello
What is the phenomenon?
Is the modem disconnected? Or is it not registered?
