Critical Problem Notification for GL-MT2500/GL-X3000/GL-XE3000

I used Mozilla-forked Librewolf without any issues.

Successfully updated u-boot on GL-X3000 using Chrome on Windows 11 PC.

Version that was displayed on u-boot screen prior to update was:

U-Boot 2022.07-rc3 (Mar 09 2023 - 16:20:34 +0800)

I will possibly update firmware later, I did not have enough time this morning. Thank you meerkat for giving me the confidence to update the u-boot.

I did just receive my brume2 (a hour ago) and updated uboot, its easy and fast, nothing really you can do wrong, but device stuck and died and no life at all.
I did contact support and wait for solution..
How ever, you guys should temporarily disable the link to mt2500 uboot, just to avoid resending hundreds of it over time..
I hope for fast support reply and replace solution, I enjoyed my brume2 for about 15-20 min.
Hope for fast reaction.

Hi,

Sorry for this issue.

What browser and version do you use to upgrade uboot?

I also received a lot of feedback successfully upgrading from users on the thread, and operations are not abnormalities.

Before releasing this new uboot file, we conducted complete local testing on many Brume 2 (s) and found no exceptions.

We will properly resolve your problems, please follow up with Arya in the email.

I’m sure I was on opera updating this device, how ever, I got an success message and the router died.

There is no discussion about who failed!

You guys should know that people buying a router like this aren’t nobs 1, next, we all or at least the most know how to update an device ..

I did upgrade and flash in the past 20 years many different devices like routers and never failed this way, especially not with an official firmware! it’s the first device that died after a success message .. Hello world, get in touch to this issue and replace devices that Bricks after an official release dear !

Its just frustrating reading an email telling me something about your policies for replacement and trying to research on the customers head if he /she did something wrong after and update that ends with an success message and an dead device.

Thanks GL-inet!
I now received my replacement from China and I must say the support was absolutely friendly and accommodating (even refunded the vat payment I had to pay on import). For the future I still hope shipments can be done from local warehouses - it should be easier and faster for the client and still have less total shipment cost for everyone involved.

One question to GL-inet: This new dewice is already fixed, right? And is there a way to check for the vulnerability myself without actually flashing the u-boot?

Because the recent theory about people bricking the device with an uboot update failure, probably caused by browser, raises two new points for me:

  1. This sounds like a maybe connected but different failure, that should be analyzed separately.
  2. The more fixed devices are out there, the more it should be prevented that people brick their device with an unnecessary uboot update!

I just upgraded my Brume2 (GL-MT2500) U-Boot bootloader to the version dated Feb 24 2025 using Google Chrome (Windows 11) with no issue. Device already had firmware version 4.7.0 installed so the firmware was not flashed afterwards. So at least another success story.

I have 2 other Brume2s at different physical locations to update, so hopefully they will be just as successful.

Some update to my Case:

Reiserouter.no did respond verry quickly and without any more discussion offered me an replacement device and support at the glance with updating for me uboot and firmware before shipping.., so they send me an new device at 0 cost for me and payed for the shipping both ways!

Since the support is Just 5 star leveled, and from the very first replay I just relaxed, I decided to add one more device, an MT3000 vpn router to some how support back this company.

I’m just verry happy living in a country with company’s that understands how to make customer’s relaxed and happy.

GL inet

Now facing the last reply from GL inet support about policy’s, third party and profit while on the the other hand, me sitting with an bricked device after updating it with official bin files ..

I understand that you guys need profit to survive, fine, the situation is clear and any reading it will face that the balance is missing supporting customer’s with emails like this.

How about customer’s that just cant return they device because the company provided it, disappeared?

If you are just unable to secure your updates the proper way and customers that stuck on devices whit no chance to get any warranty and support, for billions of reasons, then provide us with an unbrick solution!

This should be no problem for the tech team at GL inet.

Try to Understand me, devices like this are supported by geeks like us, geeks that know exactly what they want ! mostly of us have a workbench, an jtag and serial adapter to work with.

Your products meet our needs, and it is just fantastic using and plying with your compact hardware with lot of power and memory, its lovely! (and nice looking to)

Try to support people at 5 star providing an solution for a workbench at home ..

Thank you.

Owners of an MT2500 should also avoid Opera browser updating uBoot ! Use Edge and Safari thats confirmed by community.

I am unable to upgrade uboot via the web interface, but i have serial access to the MT2500 uboot interface - Can you please share instructions for upgrading uboot this way?

I was able to update the other 2 Brume2s.

One Brume2 (before I updated) did not boot up after removing the power and then restoring power (Uboot update should prevent this from happening again). I was able to get into the UBoot menu but the update failed (using Google Chrome) the first try (it was running older firmware than 4.7.0 if that matters, don't remember what version). However I was able to get into the Uboot menu again with no issue afterwards and the 2nd time it was flashed with success and is running fine.

For the other Brume2 (had firmware 4.7.0) the UBoot flashed with Goggle Chrome with no issue.

Also to add that I used the LAN port for all 3 UBoot updates.

I successfully upgraded my Brume 2 using Brave today. I'm not sure what's causing all the bricking, but GL.iNet's instructions also mention unplugging the WAN Ethernet cable so the Brume is connected to only power and a direct Ethernet connection to your PC during the U-Boot upgrade process.

I start to think it isn't a browser issue but something else.

I also used Brave but mine cold bricked, according the feedback by gl-inet they said they found a exception, but couldn't find the exact reason why.

What i do believe is that some browsers might have more potentional chance of bricking, it could be some kind of delay issue which could trigger this brick, but its unknown for me.

Usually U-boot upgrades don't have these abnormalities it either fails or it succeeds, but the random failures is strange.

It could be possible it is a voltage thing?

I connected mine with a 5v adapter btw.

Is it a Power Delivery (PD) charger?
What is the maximum current (A) it can supply for the 5V?

according the label it shows:

model: ICP12-050-2000D
input: 100-240volts (0.3A)
output: 5.0V (2.0A)

it looks fine to me, it was a charger from a router by GL but I just picked this one randomly.

on google the model shows a different one, but it looks like exactly this one.

MT2500 uboot upgrade successfully completed.
Still stuck on 4.6.8 though?
4.7.0 will not take

I used the power adapter that came with my Brume 2 when I performed the upgrade. I know power issues can definitely cause firmware update failures on other devices, so it wouldn't surprise me if using the "wrong" power adapter on the Brume 2 can do the same.

I never trust on these cheap power supplies...

On this specs, if the input is 100V / 0.3A and the output is 5V / 2A, then the efficiency is only 33%, that doesn't make too much sense.
