Critical Problem Notification for GL-MT2500/GL-X3000/GL-XE3000

Dear GL.iNet Customers,

This announcement addresses the startup failure and firmware recovery issues via U-Boot on the GL-MT2500/GL-X3000/GL-XE3000 devices. The problem stemmed from a software defect where some parameters were incorrectly defined, causing the routers to operate abnormally. We strongly recommend that all customers using these products, including GL-MT2500/GL-X3000/GL-XE3000, perform the following U-Boot bootloader and firmware upgrade to fully resolve this issue.

  1. Download and upgrade the U-Boot bootloader to version Feb 24 2025
  2. Download and upgrade the firmware to version 4.7.0

Are all the Spitz AX currently being sold on Amazon already upgraded or do they need their uBoot updated upon delivery?

Since currently Spitz AX on Amazon still has stock left, what you may buy is old firmware, please check the firmware version after receiving it.

If the firmware is v4.7.4 or newer, no upgrade is required.
If the firmware is below v4.7.4 (such as 4.4.13), please follow the above guide to upgrade uboot and firmware to the latest version.

If you have any questions about the upgrade, please email support@gl-inet.com to contact our support team.

TIA!

Okay, so, how critical is this problem?

Since it's a challenge for me to update all my MT2500s immediately, so I want to estimate the possible risk.

  • Is there a possibility that some problem occurs not only when recovering firmware, but also a normal bootup?

  • If the firmware is corrupted before updating the U-boot, is it impossible to recover via the web interface of U-Boot at all? Or just a possibility of so?

  • What's the worst scenario? For example, impossible to recover via TTL pins, so reball the eMMC is required?

Last year, my GL-MT2500 died. I contacted support, and we tried to recover it, but without success. They said the warranty had expired and offered me a discount on a new one, so it might be something serious.

Hi, my brume2 is died. In Uboot mode I’ve uploaded new Uboot successfully file but update still in error and now no led…

Worst scenario: Device bricked, no way to recover.

So an update within the next days/weeks is recommended.

I am currently running 4.7.4 on my X3000. From a process standpoint, can I take a backup via luci then restore the backup once i uboot and upgrade back to 4.7.4? Or do I need to reconfigure from scratch?

Hi, I have an MT2500A, and when I try and upload the firmware .bin linked in this post, I get an 'update failed' error.

Please advise.

I attempted the uboot upgrade on GL-X3000. I was able to visit visit http://192.168.1.1/uboot.html and upload the file uboot-x3000-20250225-md5-c9d7b2fd2451adbc0bb126e2d9729e87.bin

However, it says "upgrade failed". I tried this twice. What should I do next?

Maybe this post give you some clue on when to hold and release reset button (other than the video I'm sure you have watched)? Spitz AX (GL-X3000) Bricked - uboot won't work - #7 by CasaP. Eventually I have to do this, not able to afford if it bricks now due working on tight deadline project

As now your routers work fine, please run the upgrade for both the U-Boot and firmware. The risk is not so much and it shall work fine without problem.
If now the router has come across the startup failure issue, you shall run the above methods to recover it. The risk depends and now we don't have specific clue. But we shall take responsibilities for any problems you come acorss.

For the questions:

  1. Yes, I think it is though the possibility is low.
  2. You can still recover via the U-Boot web interface as the U-Boot bootloader works. It can be used to upgrade both the U-Boot itself and the firmware.
  3. On the customer side, I think the worst scenario is you cannot recover it with the above ways. And you will need to return it to our factory to flash the new U-Boot and firmware with some burner tools. Of course we shall provide the replacement.

Sorry for all these inconvenience anyway.

Don't worry about it. You help a lot!

(Happy user of Adguardhome update script)

Try to rename file to uboot.bin (if you are updating Uboot) or openwrt.bin (if firmware) and flash again. Should help.

@Quidn because you are violating rules

@moderators can you please take a look on this holy-war?
