I'm fairly worried about this update procedure. I think for now I will hold off updating it; I doubt whatever bug/issue these updates do, fix will manifest themselves with the unit not being powered!
Hello,
If any exception occurs after MT2500 is upgraded on uboot, you can contact our colleagues through email cs@gl-inet.com or support@gl-inet.com.
For above 3 model routers, the purchase date will be placed as the start, 1-year warranty will be extended, that is 3-year warranty.
As long as we confirm that the hardware of device is not damaged by human, we will arrange for replacement of spare parts.
Please feel free to upgrade. Thanks.
My Brume 2 I purchased in 02/2024 is also now bricked after I flashed the new uboot. It had u-boot version 2022.07-rc3. I am in contact with support to get a new one. The question here is, why is there such a high chance the device gets bricked updating the uboot bootloader? Something is not right. Also when I get the new replacment, I would assume it also will come with the older broken bootloader, and I would again have to flash the uboot update with a high chance it will brick, no?
I´ve written a mail to the support, too. Let´s wait for a positive answer. Well, I´m asking myself if anybody has flashed the mt2500 successfully. If yes, what version of the bootloader was installed before upgrading?
So far the support is asking just questions after questions instead of already shipping me a free sample! not good! I need a free replacement ASAP. I did as the guide said and also how Glinet told me to do it (they said in the email I need to do it) there was nothing to be done wrongly. The md5 hash was also correct. Not my fault! I need this unit as my main router and have no internet now at home because of this! uboot 2022.07-rc3 was on my unit with fw 4.7.0. Basically the same happened to mine as you said. After I pressed flash/update the web gui said flashed successfully (or rebooting not sure what the wording was) and then the unit was dead. I waited 10 minutes. Didnt come back anymore. I dont get any LEDs anymore after powering up, also the reset button doesnt work anymore. Bricked.
I keep my fingers crossed for a replacement. All owners of a mt2500 only have a choice between flashing the new U-Boot version, or waiting for the time the router destroys itself with a reboot. The result is the same: a bricked device.
So I hope for a fair handling of our problems. It was really not the fault of us owners. And GL.iNet surley is interessed in happy users. Maybe we should display a bit patience with the replacement. The support certainly has much to do with broken routers.
Agree. But I dont have Internet now at home, I am tethering from my phone right now to my laptop. I need a replacement ASAP. The question then also remains, if we get a free replacement, do we do the uboot update again and brick it (with high chance, 99% chance, 100%?)? Anyone on here was successful updating their Brume 2 uboot?
DO NOT UPDATE if you have a Brume 2. I've just bricked mine also, followed the same steps as @HeroicPeach described above and downloaded the file linked in @bruce's top post.
Unbelievable! ![]()
Looks like we can build the U-Boot ourselves.
Are you capable of building the above or do you want me to check if a self built mt2500 U-Boot has the same file size?
How would you recover a bricked device with this though? I can't get back into the uboot firmware upload page and no LEDs turn on on the device.
You cant, need to replace the unit or the rom chip. Not sure if the Brume 2 has some interal serial port where you could in theory reflash the bootloader through serial com.
if you want to fix it yourself it will not be easy.
you likely need to desolder the EMMC chip, and then find a EMMC programmer and find someone being kind enough to share a bin cap, which is probably zero since they don't want to share their mac address, otherwise you may could solder UART pins but if u-boot is toasted I don't think these pins actually have power.
it's better to sent it back to gl-inet for a replacement ![]()
I wont send back anything and wait months for a replacement. This is Glinets fault. They need to send a free replacement to customers today. Also not from China, but from the proper Glinet store like EU or US.
How can you confirm that the mt2500 U-Boot file is correct, by building it yourself.
I can build the U-Boot itself, it's the rebuild with ATF that I'm struggling with, the instructions are not great.
@bruce @rain Why not publish a new firmware release for each of the device. I.e. For Brume launch a Firmware v4.8 and for Spitz v4.8
Within in the Firmware you can put all the stuff you think the customer device will need.
Do not let the customer alone with your problems.
These updates are related to two devices I own but I‘m not at home.
Kind Regards
@rain I appreciate that GL.iNet has analyzed the problem and released a solution, and actively exchanging bricked ones is also good manner.
But more and more users reporting so current situation confusing us. I don't know how many tried the update but isn't it unusually high rate?
Exchange would be free if bricked, but one-way overseas shipping cost would still be on customers, and wait for some days or weeks without it.
@bruce i tried to update my mt2500 plastic variant and the uboot update failed.. But my device is still usable.. I will send you the vid maybe your team can find something.
Hi,
Truly sorry for this problem.
Please contact cs@gl-inet.com through the email and inform the device status, purchase order number, and router MAC address in the email.
Our colleagues will arrange and I believe that we can provide a satisfactory solution for you.
Hi,
Sorry for this problem.

You can upgrade the firmware and uboot for router until you back to home. I think the uboot needs to be upgraded manually separately which will be more secure. Even if upgrade manually later, just remember to take the time to upgrade it when you at home.

As long as the device is not restarted frequently, the device may be affected very little.

The warranty is extended for one year from the date of purchase, any problems you have during use can be contacted for support or warranty.
