Flint 2: worse Wi-Fi coverage on 4.8.4 compared to 4.8.3

I have a Flint 2 (GL-MT6000) router. I was previously using firmware 4.8.3 and everything was working well. After upgrading to 4.8.4 I noticed that my Wi-Fi coverage (both 2.4 and 5Ghz) has gotten worse compared to the previous firmware.

Steps I’ve taken:

  1. Upgrade from 4.8.3 to 4.8.4 keeping existing settings (where this issue was first found)
  2. Rollback to 4.8.3, everything got back to normal
  3. Upgrade again, but this time unselect “keep settings” (to test if the stock settings would fix), but the issue is still there

Have anyone else noticed this?

PS: I’m going back to 4.8.3 until it gets fixed.

Yep. Also seeing this. My son started sitting in the kitchen last night (I upgraded the router firmware 10 hours prior). He normally doesn't come out his bedroom. He said the connection on his phone is bad. Sure enough it was running either low or from mobile data.

With this and the DoH issue it's a really bad release. I'm going to downgrade the firmware.

Same here unfortunately, upgraded a few hours ago and wifi has been ABYSMAL!

Just confirming that reverting to the previous release fixed this and my DoH issue.

To optimize your wireless experience, we recommend manually setting your 5 GHz channel to Band 3 / UNII-2C (CH100 - CH144). Under current regulatory frameworks, these specific channels are permitted to operate at a higher transmit power, which will significantly improve Wi-Fi coverage and signal penetration.

While Band 3 / UNII-2C consists of DFS (Dynamic Frequency Selection) channels, the Flint 2 is a high-performance desktop router typically used in stable environments, making it highly unlikely to trigger frequent radar avoidance silences. Furthermore, we have deeply optimized the DFS scanning algorithm in the latest firmware; the system now completes the mandatory scan and begins broadcasting Wi-Fi within approximately 2 minutes of startup, greatly reducing the wait time.

What are the recommended settings for 5GHz WiFi? I currently use

  • Wi-Fi Mode: 11a/n/ac/ax
  • Bandwidth: 80 MHz
  • Channel: Auto

Me too, same location, and same settings as ‘RouteMe - There is no ‘Band 3 / UNII-2C’ option if that is what is being referred to on the Flint 2 - only the option to select a channel. I’ve manually changed mine to one of the channels specified between 100-144. It hasn’t increased my 5 GHz WiFi signal strength that I rely on for an external camera, which has lost a strength bar since the 4.8.4 ‘upgrade’.

That is sad news indeed. You seem to be getting castrated by US regulations which will significantly impact on your global customers and appeal. Shame.

Just to confirm, I’ve now downgraded both Flint 2’s back to 4.8.3 and my Wi-Fi has increased back to Max. as it was. All settings, including Adguard DNS blocklists and custom filtering rules have been maintained.

…and I would recommend making sure we all have 4.8.3 downloaded and saved. I live out in the wilds of Canada 30 miles from habitation so 4.8.3 will very likely be the last FW that my Flint 2 (and also my Slate7) will ever see.

I’m waiting for V4.9x, that will supposedly have IoT Wi-Fi network alongside Guest Wi-Fi included as standard & ready to use at the GL GUI level, as we’ve never been able to get it to work with a second Flint 2 in AP mode and maintain either internet and/or segregation. So I hope by the time 4.9x is released we aren’t also plagued with reduced strength Wi-Fi as per 4.8.4!

Why was it not in the release notes about the WiFi alteration? Didn’t it just say it fixed some bugs?

Not sure if the latest 4.8.4 snapshot has the ‘problems’ still or not, I would assume so seeing as these changes were intentional, but out of curiosity I flashed it …

Not disputing some evidently have issues, but I have to say, in terms of throughput (assuming the snapshot has these intentional WiFi changes) I get more or less the same in the far rooms of my house on 4.8.4 as I do on 4.8.3. Using the factory defaults in terms of bandwidth and channel (Auto).

I also had problems with 4.8.4. Wifi was very bad. Installed 4.8.5 beta and wifi restored. Good thing you pulled 4.8.4.

4.8.4 was pulled and is now in snapshot. I’m not sure what’s the reason. Should I rollback to 4.8.3?

And if I do, can I keep setting?

Please read the previous posts, which have covered the main reasons why this was pulled. Namely, DNS over HTTPS Wasn't working properly and Wi-Fi transmission power was reduced. This affected people with devices at longer distance from the router, which can be crucial if these are just able to get a signal in the first place.

Yes, settings are maintained as long as you select this option once you have loaded the firmware LOCALLY.
