Flint 2: worse Wi-Fi coverage on 4.8.4 compared to 4.8.3

In Luci - under Wifi settings - max 20dBm transmit power under general settings. same as uvs300 as above

I don't see it. Which tab is it under? I see status, system, network and logout.

Network then 2nd down is wireless

Then what? I just see a list of my ssid and some of my connected devices?

Ok thanks I see it now. Mine is maxed at 20 and USA country. I tried experimenting by changing the country to a few different countries but couldn't put it higher than 20. I never updated past 4.8.3

my time zone is AU but Luci shows US as country.

where can I download openwrt 25.12.2 from?

I’ve updated to 4.8.4, and got my country code set to GB. Still having excellent WiFi coverage.

I’ve posted these on the Discord channel too, but I’ll say the same here.

This could have all been avoided with,

  1. Better communications - the Release notes should have clearly outlined this change. GL.iNet you need to commit to being better about making sure your release notes are comprehensive - it avoids all this confusion and frustration if you are transparent with people.
  2. A one-time pop-up after upgrading should have been triggered to correctly set the WiFi country code.
  3. For new deployments (and for factory reset scenarios) - the initial setup should request WiFi country location correctly.
  4. Make setting WiFi country part of your GL.iNet ‘simple’ UI and smartphone app.

These aren’t horribly complicated technical challenges, these should be fairly simple, straightforward adjustments that would have helped avoid issues for a great many people.

@Bashar 25.12.2 is vanilla openwrt, not the glinet forked older version. You do not get the glinet interface but it is much more up to date. I went from op24 glinet to openwrt last Thursday. Have found the wifi range definitely stronger. I’m getting WiFi in a room it always used to drop out in. Openwet 25.12.2 has a newer wifi driver than glinet op24. Performance is noticeably better. I also find I'm consistently hitting higher speeds as well.

I just performed a ‘kitchen sink’ test on my secondary Flint 2 using 3 firmware versions using Apple Airport Utility:

V4.8.3

  • 5 GHz → -25 dBm
  • 2.4 GHz → -29 dBm

4.8.5 beta

  • 5 GHz → -34 dBm
  • 2.4 GHz → -32 dBm

4.8.4

  • 5 GHz → -36 dBm

  • 2.4 GHz → -37 dBm

    4.8.3 = strongest Wi-Fi
    4.8.5 = medium
    4.8.4 = weakest

AI suggests:
What likely changed (specific to MT6000 firmware):
4.8.3
Looser MTK power tables
Higher effective EIRP
Less strict regulatory enforcement
4.8.4
Tightened limits (likely EU compliance push)
Reduced transmit gain / power scaling
4.8.5 beta
Partial rollback or tuning adjustment
Restores some lost output, but not all.

So I’ve decided to roll back to V4.8.3 on all routers now, having tested actual output / strength myself.

I've looked at my settings in luci and I'm capped at 20 dbm max on 4.8.3 on my Flint 2 but I can't complain about coverage. I haven't ever updated it passed 4.8.3. I'm in the US and it's set to US. Could it be better than 20 dbm?

Are you able to go higher than 20 dbm in the settings in Luci? Mine is capped at 20 max.

From my understanding, LuCI won’t show anything higher regardless. I believe the firmware dictates the settings at the MTK driver level. That’s why I did my own tests.

The 20dBm doesn’t take into account antenna attenuation and or any other hardware booster - legal, it has to be total output.

So it’s likely 20dBm software, +3dBm elsewhere in the hardware/antenna = 23dBm total.

4.8.5 was released before 4.8.4 …. so likely doesnt have all changes, as opposed to rollback. Sadly.

Haven’t heard about WiFi power on 4.9 beta just released for flint 2.

Hi… I want to understand: Considering that WiFi connection is between 2 radios (router and device in two-way communication) and both should comply regulations about max emissions, how can you improve connection with a router capable to emit 1W signal (30 dbm), but your other device transmiting at much less power (I think that a battery powered device trying to transmit at 1W should drain its battery very quickly). That raw improvement of transmission power effectively improve connection range?

You have reduced signal strength also for 2.4 Ghz.
