Wifi mesh on Flint 2 or Flint 3

Dear, is it possible to use multiple routers Flint2 or Flint 3 to build a wifi mesh system? I din’t see any information in the routers specifications, but I asked to Gemini and it said that “yes they have the capability” because they implements the standard EasyMesh. Any information about that? Is it possible or not?

Hi

Unfortunately, Flint 2 and Flint 3 do not currently support Mesh functionality.

However, you can achieve a similar seamless Wi-Fi roaming experience by enabling 802.11k/v/r.

Hi. You said that “currently does not supoort”. But it’s possible that this feature will be impelemented via future software updates? Or it’s a functionality that these routers will never have, maybe due to hardware limitations?

The product team is conducting preliminary research, but it is unclear whether we will officially launch this feature or provide support for existing models.
There is no more information available at this time.

For what it is worth, I would love to switch from my existing ASUS mesh network, to a full GL.iNet mesh network in all my existing locations. If this is an available feature (or even just fully supporting the 802.11r without having to ssh into the system), I would buy many many more routers. If possible it would be nice to have the feature on as many routers as possible, but at minimum Flint 3s and Slate 7s.

I am really surprised that this is not like the #1 priority of the development team, since it is about the only completely necessary network feature that is not supported yet.

Thank you for your interest in GL.iNet products.
We will forward your suggestion to our product team for evaluation of feature prioritization.

For me it’s been a shame not to have this feature for now. I was about to buy three Flint 3 routers taking advantage of the Christmas offer, but I prefer to wait until this upgrade is available.

I too would love to see a mesh option on the Flint 2 or above. Don’t get me wrong, this router is very powerful, but it would be very useful if it had mesh capabilities.

As this has not already been implemented, perhaps best to think about a more universal mesh system such as “Easy Mesh” so it can easily be integrated with other compatible nodes, but I understand that you may be able to customise more features with a bespoke mesh system.

Dear, any update on this feature? I think it’s very very necessary to have this feature available in the Flint 3. Many brands include this functionality by default, and I consider that GL-iNet shouldn't be left behind. I have 3 routers, and I’m forced to apply a lot of configurations on all of them to simulate it. And it doesn't work quite right…

Hi

As part of our current roadmap, we’re tentatively planning to introduce Mesh functionality for Flint 3 and Slate 7 in v4.9.x (not the initial release, but a subsequent one).
We don’t have a specific timeline to share at this time, but we’ll do our best to keep you updated as soon as we have any new information.

Please stay tuned to the forum for updates!

Sounds fantastic! If you need someone to test it, don't hesitate to contact me

What about the Flint 2 Will? I’ve just been in touch with support about getting the 3 Wi-Fi networks now available by default on V4.9.0 beta on the primary Flint 2 working on the secondary Flint 2 whilst maintaining segregation.

Jose stated that mesh will be a new feature coming soon and I could either wait for this new feature or proceed with direct support to get it working now. If it’s not going to be for the Flint 2 then I’ll need to progress with my support request to get it working. So some confirmation would be appreciated that this will be a Flint 2 feature, and secondly approximately how long will this take (weeks, months or years)? The Flint 2 would appear to have more than capable hardware over the Flint 3* models. Thanks

We do have plans to add Mesh support for the Flint 2, but it is a lower priority and likely won’t be available in the short term — we currently do not have a specific timeline.

In addition, I would like to mention that VLAN support will not be included in the early releases of v4.9.0; it is expected to arrive in a later minor version.

If you do not want to wait, providing remote access to our team so we can assist with the configuration may be a better option.

I’ve decided to leave it as it’s just not workable with your stock customisations and these drivers. I’ve tried again today for 10 hours with multiple AI models and they all say the same. Reluctantly I’m now having to look elsewhere.

So does this mean that there is a way I can get my Flint 2 and my Slate to work together as a Mesh. Even using 4.8.3|OP24 I am unable to get a proper handoff when roaming between the devices. I bougth two Flint2s and two Slates for exactly this purpose and as pwoerful as the Flint 2 is, my home network was in a better state with my Huawei AX3 mesh.

Hi,

Could you clarify which Slate model you are referring to?

If you mean a Flint 2 + Slate 7 setup, then yes, that would be possible.

Sorry for the delay, was trying to find it after I put it away when 802.11r failed to work between the two. Unfortunately it’s a Slate AX1800. Does that mean I’m out of luck?

If I bought a Slate 7, what would be involved in creating a real mesh where devices would shift transparently between the two

Yes, if it is the AXT1800 (Slate AX), then it may not be supported.

We have not officially released Mesh support yet, so you may need to wait until the official release. We will likely provide documentation on how to configure Mesh at that time.

At the moment, Flint 2 and Slate 7 firmware do not yet support Mesh networking.
