2 identical ATX1800 - different behavior, why?

Hello,

may be someone can explain what is going on.
I had ATX1800 (from the first batch, "early bird", has been actively using it for several years) and decided to get a second one as a backup (received a week ago from Amazon). The last one has a problem with 2.4GHz radio and USB flash drive attached - clients cannot connect, it has been already discussed on the forum (I saw those messages and could not figure out what those users could do wrong since my AXT1800 ran just fine with USB cellular modems and USB flash drives attached - now I am in the same boat).

old AXT1800 - firmware 4.2.0
new AXT1800 - tried firmware 4.0.1, 4.0.2,4.2.0, 4.6.8 - the same issue persists.

both AXT1800 use the identical USB flash drives and wifi settings, I even swapped the drives - the new AXT1800 do have a problem with 2.4GHz radio and a USB flash drive attached.

And I suspect it is a hardware related problem or how else it can be ?

What should I do next - return the new AXT1800 for replacement, ask for refund (it they all nowadays have this problem) ?
Is there a way to receive a properly working AXT1800 or may be it is possible for make some internal changes (I saw propositions to wrap the USB drives into metal foil - I will not do that but if necessary I can add some shielding inside, I just need to know the details )

thanks!

Sounds to me you received a DOA which happens time to time. I suggest you exchange it for another one. No, there is no way to make sure you get a working one unless you want to travel to the factory.

Sorry, it makes no sense, how the device can be DOA if 2.4Ghz wifi works just fine without a USB flash attached?

Because it doesn't work as intended when something is attached to an USB port. Technically it's not DOA, but I use it as a blanket statement when a device doesn't function as designed and something is faulty out of the box. And in your case the router does not work as designed. Makes sense?

Probably the USB3.0 port interfere the WiFi speed, but only affect 2.4GHz, not 5GHz.

Some users share his idea:

It seems that the conflict between USB 3.0 and WiFi 2.4GHz cannot be avoided.

If the USB 2.0 is acceptable, please select the 2.0, and it may improve the stability of WiFi 2.4GHz.

The latest firmware I tried is 4.6.8 and it does not have a switch between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 Either way that does not seem to be a solution since I use older firmware (which is quite stable) with cellular modems in usb enclosures and have no idea how all this will affect their usability - dont have time to test all this just to learn if there is a "workaround".

I still would like to hear a meaningful answer (preferably from an engineer and not from a saleman) regarding a possible difference between the older and newer AXT1800, i.e. what has changed in production (a PCB layout, different component locations, different kind of used electronic components etc - there is a reason why one device is the subject to the interference and another is not ) just to make sure how to proceed - to ask for replacement or just return it and forget about AXT1800 in general (so far it was my favorite device (and I have all your routers except for cellular) due to 4 core CPU).

Bruce, could you please also have a look (or pass this info to the right person) at my investigation regarding nonstandard behavior of ipset in AXT1800 v.4.0 -4.6 firmware -I think I spent enough time and deserve the answer:
ipset & banip AXT1800

After confirming with the R&D, the hardware of the AXT1800 has not changed, thus there should be no difference between the 2 routers in your hand.

If USB is removed, will the Wi-Fi performance be normal?

I think I could not provide any advice on return and exchange. Sorry.

Hello Bruce,

If USB is removed, will the Wi-Fi performance be normal?
yes, 2.4 Ghz wifi works just fine.

I think I could not provide any advice on return and exchange. Sorry.

Thank you anyway.

It may be that USB interfere with 2.4GHz WiFi I assume.
If you think trouble, you can get the replacement and check again.
